About: 3Dwm is a three-dimensional user environment that can run on
immersive Virtual Reality hardware (such as CAVEs and HMDs) as well as on
desktop computers. It is a platform for the research and development of
three-dimensional user interfaces, providing a means of exploring possible
future user interfaces. 3Dwm is fully distributed using CORBA. Other
planned and implemented features include OpenGL rendering, X11 (and other
windowing system) bindings, CAVELib support, 3D TrueType fonts, general
streaming movie support, a 3DUI widget kit, etc.

Changes: This release adds solid modeling (CSG) functionality, mathematical
3D primitives (spheres, cuboids, cylinders, etc), and the first real 3Dwm
application. VNC bindings are now complete (both input and output). An
XML-based configuration scheme using a C++ implementation of SAX has been
added. Event propagation mechanism with an event mapping language has been
implemented. Support for several input devices such as mouse, keyboard, and
headtracker has been added. There are various bugfixes and other feature
enhancements.

  Wednesday, August 22nd 2001 11:52

Categories: Internet :: WWW/HTTP, Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content,
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries

About: formHandler is a package of PHP-scripts for basic sending of data to
a mailaddress submitted in an HTML form. This package is fully
object-oriented and extremely modular. Performance is very good, and it is
very easy to add home-made modules. Several modules are included with
formHandler, such as Required-module, Template-modules, Reply-module,
Attachment-module, Fieldcheck-module, and Referer-module. It is possible
to use this script for every form on your site.

Changes: All output (mail, display, reply) now works with template-output.
Configuration can now be done in a separate file instead of only in the
form. Some additions were made in the documentation. A little cleanup of
files and code was done. Some minor bugfixes were made after a lot of
testing. This release is fairly stable, and a beta release is expected in
the near future.

Category: Software Development :: Quality Assurance

About: Ick, derived from Import Check, is an import management tool for
programs written in Java. It helps you eliminate unnecessary import
statements. Unlike other tools that examine Java bytecode, Ick examines
Java source and infers the required import statements, rather than
extracting them from bytecode directly.

[027] - Java Serialization to XML 0.8.20.1
  by Brendan Macmillan (http://freshmeat.net/users/yow/)
  Wednesday, August 22nd 2001 15:09

About: JSX provides your Java programs with XML persistence and
data-exchange for zero-effort. As a replacement for Java's own
Serialization, it works for all objects without any set-up. You need not
change your classes or design schema or write scripts (unlike design-time
solutions such as JAXB, Jato, and Castor). Other run-time solutions (such
as JOX and LTPforJB) only work for a subset of objects (e.g. Java Beans).
JSX works for all objects, handles evolution of classes, and needs no
design-time setup at all. It just works.

Changes: This release runs again under JDK 1.2 (but only sets final fields
under JDK 1.3).

[039] - Mojo Mail 2.5.1
  by justin simoni (http://freshmeat.net/users/skazat/)
  Wednesday, August 22nd 2001 14:13

Category: Communications :: Email :: Mailing List Servers

About: Mojo Mail is a light-weight Web-based email mailing list manager. It
supports announce-only lists and group discussion lists, as well as
archiving, double opt-in subscriptions, and double opt-out unsubscriptions.
List mailings can be sent using sendmail, qmail, or even with a straight
SMTP connection (either all at once, or in timed batches). All list
administration can be done through your browser via Mojo Mail's
administrative control panel. Creating new lists and administrating them is
easy. Mojo Mail is a great alternative to programs such as Majordomo if you
want to give more control to the actual list owners, who may not have much
experience with such applications. Mojo Mail can be run simply as a CGI
script and needs no special modules installed. The entire look of html
pages created by Mojo Mail can be customized with any template you can
provide, on a list by list basis.

Changes: This release includes security enhancements, including restricting
access to administration control panels by IP address and encrypted root
password. This release also includes logging enhancements. Almost all of
the activites of Mojo Mail can be logged. This release also includes the
ability to send a Web page from your list's control panel. Finally, you can
now restart a dropped mailing where you left off.

[041] - MUSCLE 1.82
  by Jeremy Friesner (http://freshmeat.net/users/jaf/)
  Wednesday, August 22nd 2001 10:03

Categories: Database :: Database Engines/Servers, Software Development ::
Libraries, Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: MUSCLE (Multi User Server Client Linking Environment) is a messaging
server and networking API. It is portable to any OS with a sockets API and
a C++ compiler. It lets programs communicate via streams of
PortableMessages (very similar to BeOS's BMessage class) layered over TCP
streams. The included server program ("muscled") lets its clients message
each other, and/or store information in its serverside hierarchical
database. The database supports queries via regex and "live" updates via a
subscription mechanism, and may be subclassed to if application-specific
logic is needed.

Changes: During a memory shortage, muscled now kicks users whose output
message queues have grown too large. The signature of
AbstractMessageIOGateway's DoInput() and DoOutput() was changed to
DoInput(uint32 & addReadBytes) and DoOutput(uint32 & addWroteBytes).
muscled now keeps track of how long an output has been "stalled" (i.e. it
has bytes queued to send to the client but none have actually been sent),
and it will drop any clients that have been stalled for more than 20
minutes.

Category: Software Development :: Object Brokering :: CORBA

About: ORBit-Python is a project to develop seamless and compliant Python
bindings for ORBit. It processes all IDL dynamically so that no separate
IDL compilation step is necessary. It supports most of ORBit's type codes,
and should be useful for most projects. It is used successfully in several
commercial systems.

Changes: Compliance with the Python mapping specification was greatly
improved. The CORBA exceptions were overhauled. Object references have been
implemented as class instances, which is useful for object introspection.
This release works better with IDLs from the GNOME project. An external API
for extensions (such as bonobo-python) was added. All knonw memory leaks
have been plugged. Upgrading from previous versions is highly recommended.

[057] - PLEAC 20010823
  by Guillaume Cottenceau (http://freshmeat.net/users/gcottenc/)
  Wednesday, August 22nd 2001 19:08

About: The PLEAC project aims to re-implement the solutions presented in
the Perl Cookbook (by Tom Christiansen & Nathan Torkington, published by
O'Reilly) in other programming languages. If successful, this project may
become a primary resource for quick, handy, free solutions to most common
programming problems using higher-level programming languages. It could
also be useful for comparison on ease-of-use and power/efficiency of these
languages.

Changes: Major upgrades of Python and Haskell, and new implementations in
Guile, TCL, C++/Stl/Boost, OCaml, and Java.

About: Plucker is an offline HTML viewer for PalmOS which comes packaged
with a UNIX and Linux conduit. An included script spiders HTML pages to a
user-supplied depth, parses them on the client machine into an easily
processed format, and then sends them to the Pilot. Plucker supports
clickable images, italics, multiple databases, configurable display
parameters and stylus options, compression, Perl, Python, and Delphi
conduits, etc.

[059] - Pocesti 0.4
  by Michael Polak (http://freshmeat.net/users/xchaos/)
  Wednesday, August 22nd 2001 14:28

About: Pocesti is filter which allows printing of (certain) iso-latin-2
(iso-8859-2) characters from Mozilla. It converts Unicode Postscript output
generated by Mozilla to more conservative iso-latin-2 Postscript. It has
been tested with a GhostScript installation using iso-latin-2 fonts. It can
be also used to replace the ogonkify utility when printing iso-latin-2
pages from Netscape 4.x. As a side effect, it also allows stripping of
unwanted header and footer lines from Postscript output and printing using
other font faces than the default Times-Roman. It is just quick and dirty
temporary solution which should become obsolete when Mozilla is improved to
allow advanced configuration of its internal HTML-to-PS converter.

Changes: Ghostscript was sometimes refusing to print when %%Title: included
ISO-8859-2 characters, so Pocesti now removes %%Title: from Postscript
streams.

[060] - Pseudo Random Number Generator Daemon 0.9.23
  by Laurent Caillat-Vallet (http://freshmeat.net/users/dool/)
  Wednesday, August 22nd 2001 15:22

Categories: Security :: Cryptography, System

About: The Pseudo Random Number Generator Daemon (PRNGD) offers an EGD
compatible interface for obtaining random data. It is intented to be used
as an entropy source to feed other software, especially software based on
OpenSSL. Like EGD, it calls system programs to collect entropy. Unlike EGD,
it does not generate a pool of random bits that can be called from other
software. Instead, it feeds the bits gathered into the OpenSSL PRNG, from
which the "random bits" are obtained when requested. This way, PRNGD is
never drained and can never block (unlike EGD), so it is also suitable to
seed inetd-started programs. It also features a seed-save file, so that it
is immediately usable after system start.

[062] - rdiff-backup 0.2.1
  by Ben Escoto (http://freshmeat.net/users/bescoto/)
  Wednesday, August 22nd 2001 19:13

Category: System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: rdiff-backup backs up one directory to another. The target
directory ends up a copy of the source directory, but extra reverse diffs
are stored in the target directory so you can still recover files lost
some time ago. The idea is to combine the best features of a mirror and
an incremental backup. rdiff-backup can also operate in a bandwidth-
efficient manner over a pipe, like rsync. Thus you can use rdiff-backup
and ssh to securely back a hard drive up to a remote location, and only
the differences will be transmitted.

Changes: Minor bugfixes.

[065] - rpmlint 0.35
  by Fred (http://freshmeat.net/users/fredericlepied/)
  Wednesday, August 22nd 2001 09:59

Categories: Software Development :: Quality Assurance, System :: Archiving
:: Packaging, System :: Software Distribution Tools

About: rpmlint is a tool to check common errors on RPM packages. It's
designed to check Mandrake Linux packages, but it works with all RPM
packages.

Changes: Libraries which are not linked against libc now cause
BinariesCheck.py to produce errors instead of warnings. However, libc
doesn't need to be linked against libc, and the dynamic linker doesn't need
dependency information. Some of the library checks were fixed. A missing
check on obsoleted packages was added to TagsCheck.py. FilesCheck.py now
checks unreadable files. PostCheck.py now checks ~/ instead of ~ to prevent
awk scripts from giving false reports. A check for / in menu titles was
added to MenuCheck.py. Missing menu entries were also added. 'bs' was added
as a valid language code name in I18NCheck.py.

[068] - SANTK 2.2
by University of Minnesota Fibre Channel Research Group
(http://freshmeat.net/users/umfc/)
  Wednesday, August 22nd 2001 16:33

Categories: Scientific/Engineering, Software Development, System ::
Networking

About: SANTK (Storage Area Network Configuration Toolkit) is a toolkit
written in Java 1.3 to better facilitate SAN design and development. The
major areas of difficulty in SAN design lie in the architecture of the SANs
themselves. Scalability, network complexity, and netlist management become
cumbersome as the number of nodes in the network increases. In order to
address these problems, it is necessary to be able to dynamically design
and record the topology of a network. The purpose of the SANTK is to assist
in resolving these issues.

Changes: This release includes device layering, enabling the user to toggle
the visibility of devices by their type. The user can now access the SAN
description, Rack Mount, and scalability displays from the manual builder.
It also supports switch type designation, allowing users to designate
individual switches for targets or initiators only. Finally, the speed of
the fabric verification process has been greatly increased.
