[001] - bkcvs 0.1.1
  by Roland Riegel (http://freshmeat.net/users/rolandriegel/)
  Sunday, August 5th 2001 11:43

Categories: Software Development :: Build Tools, Software Development ::
Version Control :: CVS

About: bkcvs allows you to easily download the current KDE developer
sources from the CVS repository and compile them without any user
interaction. It automatically manages the source copy in a local directory,
and asks for several other options concerning your future KDE CVS install.
For example, you can specify which languages you want to use.

Changes: Command line switches for separate downloading and compiling were
added.

[002] - cEURonv 0.1
  by squisher (http://freshmeat.net/users/squisher/)
  Sunday, August 5th 2001 15:59

About: cEURonv is a small GNOME applet for converting currencies, from DM
(German Marks) to and from Euros. It should be handy to have it in the
panel ready when you have to compare prices more often, as the EURO will
become official currency next year.

[003] - Cymbaline 0.9e
  by rainy (http://freshmeat.net/users/rainy/)
  Sunday, August 5th 2001 19:24

About: Cymbaline is a console mp3 player with weighted lists. Each track
has a score associated with it. Scores can be used in several ways: random
mode will play tracks with high scores more often; you can skip to the next
track with high score; you can set a threshold so that only tracks with
certain score (or higher) will be played. Scores are changed based on
listening patterns (skipping a track decreases the score, playing complete
track increases it), but may be also set manually. Additionally, cymbaline
uses an original album-oriented playlist (you can skip to the next album,
start playing specific album, etc). Cymbaline also allows easy searching on
a playlist.

Changes: Changing threshold now builds a new playlist, so all commands
will work normally in threshold mode now. The progress bar and time
indicator are now updated in real time. A pause command has been added. Cy
will now check for new versions on startup. For other changes and fixes,
see the CHANGES file.

[004] - darkstat 0.6
  by Emil Mikulic (http://freshmeat.net/users/darkmoon/)
  Sunday, August 5th 2001 03:38

Category: System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Darkstat is an ntop-workalike network statistics gatherer. Built to
be faster and smaller than ntop, it uses libpcap to capture network
traffic and serves up Web page reports of statistics such as data
transferred by host, port, and protocol. It also has a neat bandwidth usage
graph.

Changes: This release features more accurate gathering of statistics, a
much improved Web interface and Web server, better handling of command-line
arguments, and an optimized build for lower CPU utilization.

[005] - docbook2X 0.7.0
  by Steve Cheng (http://freshmeat.net/users/stevecheng/)
  Sunday, August 5th 2001 19:29

About: docbook2X is a bunch of tools for converting DocBook documents into
man pages and Texinfo.

Changes: Many bugs were fixed, and features were added in XSLT stylesheets
and Perl scripts. The program docbook2texi-libxslt was added. A C-based
tool to translate UTF-8 characters was added. The documentation has been
updated. The build system now uses autoconf and automake.

[006] - doxygen 1.2.9.1
  by Dimitri van Heesch (http://freshmeat.net/users/dvh/)
  Sunday, August 5th 2001 12:22

About: Doxygen is a cross-platform, JavaDoc-like documentation system for
C++, Java, C, and IDL. Doxygen can be used to generate an on-line class
browser (in HTML) and/or an off-line reference manual (in LaTeX or RTF)
from a set of source files. Doxygen can also be configured to extract the
code-structure from undocumented source files. This can be very useful to
quickly find your way in large source distributions.

Changes: This version fixes some annoying bugs that were present in the
previous release.

[007] - elca 0.999 (Unstable)
  by Jiri Polcar (http://freshmeat.net/users/polcar/)
  Sunday, August 5th 2001 13:41

About: Elca (Extended Line Calculator) is a real-time Perl calculator
(i.e., it evaluates expressions immediately as you type them). It supports
hexadecimal, octal, and binary numbers, complex numbers, variables, string,
list and hash operations, etc. It can convert expressions from human style
to valid Perl code before evaluating them, and has a mechanism for
importing external modules, allowing almost arbitrary extensions.

Changes: Elca now reads commands from standard input, if any are given.
Elca can now save actual expressions to the history file if is quiting by
CTRL-C (SIGINT). Some bugs in reading configuration were fixed. Some bugs
regarding reading of external modules were fixed.

[008] - Epeios 2001-08-04
  by Claude SIMON (http://freshmeat.net/users/epeios/)
  Sunday, August 5th 2001 12:38

About: The Epeios project consists of libraries and software, essentially
coded in C++, which work under UNIX and Windows. The libraries include a
new concept of memory management, error handling and frontend/broker
interaction. You can also handle sockets, multitasking, semaphores, pipes,
shared memory, etc., and various data structures like lists, stacks,
queues, indexes, etc.

Changes: Backend-related and CGI-related libraries have been moved into
their own subprojects ('ebkd' and 'ecgi'). Updates for compatibility with
g++ 3.0 were made.

[009] - eXist 0.5
  by wolf (http://freshmeat.net/users/wolfgangm/)
  Sunday, August 5th 2001 13:13

Category: Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: eXist is a repository and retrieval engine for XML documents. It
provides pluggable storage backends, storing XML either in a relational
database or using a native backend. It has primarily been designed to
support fast fulltext searches by XPath queries. Documents are stored in a
native form which allows fast, index-based retrieval. No mapping, explicit
indexing, or schema editing is required.

Changes: This release introduces a pure Java implementation of the native
XML storage backend. This implementation is much better optimized for
storing, indexing, and retrieving XML. The server now provides access by
XML-RPC, as well as HTTP. The server also supports document collections and
integrates nicely with Cocoon2.

About: fwanalog is a shell script that parses and summarizes firewall
logfiles. It understands logs from BSD ipf, Linux 2.2 ipchains and 2.4
iptables. It uses the excellent log analysis program Analog (also free
software) to create its reports. It does so by converting the firewall log
into a fake web server log and calling Analog with a modified
configuration.

Changes: The date is now always correct in today's report. New features
include Linux 2.4 ICMP support and support for firewalls with dynamic IPs.

  Sunday, August 5th 2001 15:42

Category: Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers

About: GLiv is an image viewer that uses Imlib2 to load images, and OpenGL
to render them. Moving and zooming is very fast and smooth if you have an
OpenGL board.

Changes: Lots of minor fixes, a fix for crashing if OpenGL is not available
at runtime, the Open dialog is visible in fullscreen mode and doesn't blur
the border of big images, a new option dialog, and new menu entries and
keybindings. When not using -s the file list is sorted. If the image
loading crashes, it outputs the filename.

About: Linux is a clone of the Unix kernel, written from scratch by Linus
Torvalds with assistance from a loosely-knit team of hackers across the
Net. It aims towards POSIX and Single UNIX Specification compliance. It has
all the features you would expect in a modern fully-fledged Unix kernel,
including true multitasking, virtual memory, shared libraries, demand
loading, shared copy-on-write executables, proper memory management, and
TCP/IP networking.

Changes: This version includes an IA64 update, general cleanups, a new
version of atyfb, zone aging fixes, and sane limiting of IO requests.

[033] - Mod_Survey 3.0.5 (Stable)
  by faidros (http://freshmeat.net/users/faidros/)
  Sunday, August 5th 2001 12:15

Category: Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Mod_survey is an Apache mod_perl module which allows users to create
their own Web questionnaires using an XML-based tag notation. It supports
exporting of data into several file formats, including SPSS syntax,
semi-colon delimited fields, and SQL script. It also provides limited
support for descriptive statistics of the submitted data, and stylesheet
customizations of layout.

Changes: Binary connectivity has been added so that metadata and data can
be acquired as a blob with windows byte order. A Delphi 5 example has been
added to demonstrate the binary connectivity. The PHP connectivity has been
upgraded so that data can now be fetched using include() rather than a loop
of eval(). A couple of spelling mistakes have been corrected in the example
files.

About: Mozilla is a web browser that is being developed by the Free
Software Community with the cooperation and support of Netscape. Initially,
its development was based on an early version of Netscape Communicator 5.0.
But most of it was disposed of halfway and the current Mozilla is a
completely new software based on the "NGLayout" layout engine developed for
Netscape Communicator 6. "Netscape 6," a web browser of Netscape, is based
on Mozilla.

Changes: Continued stability improvements with 16 top crash bugs fixed
since 0.9.2. These bugs were fixed thanks to data generated by users
running talkback builds. The Subscribe dialog now lets you search for all
newsgroups containing a string when subscribing to newsgroups. The Modern
theme has several changes to icons and sidebar tabs. Proxy Auto-Config has
been implemented on the Macintosh. There is a new preference for choosing
between Windows and Linux scrollbar behaviour when the mouse strays off the
scrollbar when you're in the process of scrolling. Chatzilla is now
localizable.

  by Christian Ospelkaus (http://freshmeat.net/users/ospelkau/)
  Sunday, August 5th 2001 13:04

About: MToolsFM (formerly mfm) is a GUI frontend for mtools and should make
access to floppies a lot easier for beginners. It has the basic
functionality of a file-manager.

Changes: Basic support was added for tar, zip, gzip, bzip2, and split. This
should enable users to easily split large files onto several floppy discs.
The new features can be found in the "Utility" menu. There is also some new
documentation on these features available in the "Help" menu. This release
should update the display much faster when calling subprocesses. A small
icon was added to show activity when subprocesses are active and the GUI is
blocked.

[037] - My Photo Gallery 2.5
  by Mike Spice (http://freshmeat.net/users/mikespice/)
  Sunday, August 5th 2001 11:37

About: My Photo Gallery is a Web-based photo gallery that also supports
non-image filetypes. It is easy to setup and even easier to maintain.
Slick-looking image galleries and thumbnails are generated on the fly from
any root directory that you specify. Creating an album can be done by using
the included Web-based adiminstration tool or by creating a directory and
copying your pictures and files to that directory. A Web administration
interface is available to help add descriptions, rotate images, and more.
It includes advanced features such as image logging, resizing, image
rotation, and visitor comments. Unlimited filetypes may be recognized, and
custom images for them can be displayed in your galleries, allowing you to
archive MP3s, MPEGs, AVIs, etc.

Changes: The album display routines and the Web-based admin tool were
completely rewritten. My Photo Gallery now supports thumbnails, resizing,
and rotating of JPEG, GIF, and PNG files. Support was added for recognition
of unlimited filetypes with custom icons (20 or so are natively supported).
Both images and files can now be kept in your galleries. The admin tool now
allows for rotation of images. The EXIF data embedded in JPEGs (camera
type, iso, shutterspped, aperature, etc) is now extracted and displayed.

apparent that some newsreaders mangle filenames. This tool will change the
above filename to something like 'eagle_nebula_0356.jpg'. A number of
commandline options are provided.

Changes: A possible segfault when dealing with extremely long filenames has

[046] - RenAttach 1.1.0
  by Jem Berkes (http://freshmeat.net/users/jberkes/)
  Sunday, August 5th 2001 19:27

Category: Communications :: Email :: Filters

About: Renattach is a small, efficient, and surprisingly effective filter
designed primarily to offer an additional level of safety to Windows users
whose e-mails pass through a UNIX-like mail server. Many modern viruses are
spread through e-mail, and renattach combats such viruses by filtering
e-mail attachments based on file extension. The idea is to rename
potentially dangerous attachments (executable ones) so that the user, or
the user's poorly written e-mail software, does not accidentally execute
the attachment. Users can filter their mail through renattach simply by
editing their ".forward" files, so the software does not require
administrator privileges to set up.

Changes: Scripts for configure, make, install and uninstall have been
added. A man page has been added. The code has been converted to 100% pure
C. The default bad file extension list is much more complete. An upper
limit has been placed on the growing-dynamic-buffer algorithm. Good and bad
file extensions (settings) are now read from renattach.conf. Partial mode
has been renamed to badlist mode.

[052] - streamripper 1.0.5
  by Jon Clegg (http://freshmeat.net/users/jonclegg/)
  Sunday, August 5th 2001 19:26

Categories: Communications :: File Sharing, Multimedia :: Sound/Audio ::
Capture/Recording

About: streamripper records shoutcast-compatible streams. For shoutcast
style streams it finds the "meta data" or track separation data, and uses
that as a marker for where the track should be separated. For live365
streams it hits the Web site and finds when a track has changed. Either
way, the MP3 data will be decoded and scanned for a silent point which is
where tracks will be created.

Changes: Optional sequence numbers have been added to the output of files
(i.e. 01-track.mp3, 02-track.mp3). You can now limit rips by specifying max
MB. This release compiles under MacOSX. Oddsock's nifty ID3 stuff has been

[053] - SuperRescue CD 2.0.0a (2.x)
  by H. Peter Anvin (http://freshmeat.net/users/hpa/)
  Sunday, August 5th 2001 11:38

About: SuperRescue is a single very large bootable system-on-a-disk. It's
based on the observation that the vast majority of systems allow you to do
so much more than the minimal system. Therefore, it isn't for everything,
but for most desktop systems, it provides a much nicer rescue environment
than your average rescue floppy. It requires an i386 PC with 24 MB of RAM
and a bootable CD-ROM. PCMCIA support is implemented but somewhat limited.
It is based on RedHat 7. (Version 1 is based on RedHat 6.)

Changes: This version fixes a number of bugs in the build script, which was
basically unusable in 2.0.0. Like all "letter" releases, this update
affects you only if you intend to build custom versions using the build
scripts.

  Sunday, August 5th 2001 19:23

Category: Communications :: Usenet News

About: The Usenet Binary Harvester (ubh) is a Perl console application
which automatically discovers, downloads, and decodes single-part and
multi-part Usenet binaries. It automatically assembles multi-part binaries,
provides searching via Perl regular expression syntax, and provides a
pre-selection capability whereby the user can interactively choose which
binaries to download. Ubh uses a standard .newsrc file to control which
groups to process, and uses the .newsrc to keep track of articles already
processed. It also handles uuencoded binaries and MIME attachments.
