Categories: Database, Internet :: WWW/HTTP, Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic
Content, Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries,
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: Message Boards, Software
Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: The ACS (ArsDigita Community System) is a sophisticated, scalable
platform for Web development, with support for content management,
commerce, workflow, messaging, session management, permissions, bulletin
boards, and many other applications.

Changes: This release is based on the J2EE platform, and includes robust,
upgradeable APIs, an XSLT-based presentation infrastructure, a web user
interface development framework, a persistence layer for database
abstraction, a pluggable authentication system based on JAAS, and support
for globalization. In addition, this release includes a full-featured
Content Management System that supports user-definable workflows for
publishing content.

[002] - atool 0.10.0
  by Oskar Liljeblad (http://freshmeat.net/users/osk/)
  Wednesday, August 1st 2001 05:24

About: atool is a script for managing file archives of various types (tar,
tar+gzip, zip, etc). The main command is probably 'aunpack' which extracts
files from an archive. It overcomes the dreaded "multiple files in archive
root" problem by first extracting to a unique subdirectory, and then moving
back the files if possible. aunpack also prevents local files from being
overwritten by mistake. Other commands provided are apack (for creating
archives), als (for listing files in archives), and acat (for extracting
files to stdout).

Changes: New option -e, --each to extract or list multiple archives in one
command. Fixed a bug causing gzip, bzip, bzip2, and compressed files not to
be identified correctly. Added sections `Examples' and `Known Bugs' to the
manual page.

  by Gerald Teschl (http://freshmeat.net/users/gtesiacat/)
  Wednesday, August 1st 2001 06:56

About: AutoUpdate is a simple Perl script which performs a task similar to
Red Hat's up2date or autorpm. It can be used to automatically download and
upgrade RPMs from different FTP sites. Moreover, it can also be used to
keep a server with a customized (Red Hat) distribution plus all clients up
to date.

Changes: Added support for grub boot loader and included some feature
fixes.

  by topher1kenobe (http://freshmeat.net/users/topher1kenobe/)
  Wednesday, August 1st 2001 15:32

Categories: Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content, Office/Business

About: AWOL is an in/out board, similar to something you'd see on the wall
of a lobby or desk of a switchboard operator, to keep track of who's in the
building, when they'll be back, etc. It's accessable from the Web, so
people can mark themselves in or out from their own desk.

Changes: New group switch at the top of the main page, a small pop-up
window for quick switching (it can sit on your desktop and allow you to
switch in or out without having to load the whole board), and improvements
to the condensed version (but you have to edit it to put paths in
correctly).

[018] - elca 0.99 (Unstable)
  by Jiri Polcar (http://freshmeat.net/users/polcar/)
  Wednesday, August 1st 2001 13:52

About: Elca (Extended Line Calculator) is a real-time Perl calculator
(i.e., it evaluates expressions immediately as you type them). It supports
hexadecimal, octal, and binary numbers, complex numbers, variables, string,
list and hash operations, etc. It can convert expressions from human style
to valid Perl code before evaluating them, and has a mechanism for
importing external modules, allowing almost arbitrary extensions.

Changes: Elca now has a "no-real-time" mode, whic is useful for some types
of Perl expression evalution. If Elca is run in non-interactive mode (where
expressions are specified on the command line), then Term::ReadLine is no
longer initialized. Some useful options were added.

Categories: Internet :: WWW/HTTP, Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers,
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: Page Counters, Internet ::
WWW/HTTP :: Site Management, System :: Networking

About: FEZ-Probester is a JavaScript-based Website performance measurement
system, reporting on Website performence as experienced by actual end
users during real visits to the measured site. Unlike most commercially
available performance measurement systems, FEZ-Probester measures the
total time to download and render a Web page, accounting for last mile
connectivity, and performs such measurements from as many different
machines as a site has unique visitors. Plus, it's free.

Changes: data_file config parsing has been moved from fez_probester_ae.c to
fez_probester_de.cgi.c. This eliminated the need for any config file
parsing in fez_probester_ae.c. An error HTML page that is displayed when a
critical error occurs has been added, as well as error checking on user
arguments and return values from procedures. Warning messaging has been
added to the resulting HTML graph when non-critical errors occur. Graph
granularity has been increased by adding additional buckets per time.

[021] - FEZhead 1.0.2
  by Eric Boyd (http://freshmeat.net/users/EricLBoyd/)
  Wednesday, August 1st 2001 17:42

Categories: Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers, Internet :: WWW/HTTP ::
Site Management, System :: Networking

About: FEZhead is a global load balancer, working at both the DNS level,
and (optionally) at the HTTP level to select the best content server of a
set of content servers, to answer a particular HTTP request. It can be
used to set up a network of caches, to mirror an origin server, or to
maximize the usage of multiple pipes for a multi-homed Web server. Each
of these solutions makes a Website more reliable, and faster.

Changes: libfhhr.a is now beta quality, and suitable for wrapping in an
Apache module, a Tux module, or a Squid plug-in. Problems with
test_fezhead_redirector have been fixed. Bind IP address has been added to
the configuration file of fezhead_redirector. The need to define DNS port
in the config file has been fixed. The version number is now a single
#define. A problem with the -w flag expecting a trailing slash in the
argument has been fixed. fezhead_newscan.[ch] has been renamed to
fezhead_ping.[ch].

  Wednesday, August 1st 2001 19:03

About: Firewall is a set of scripts (firewall, fwup, and fwdown) that
implement an ipchains firewall and various forms of network address and
port translation. All you have to do is read the policy file and edit it to
reflect your topology and filtering policy. It supports many different
types of network topology (single host, traditional forwarding,
masquerading, port forwarding, alias port forwarding and NAT), up to 10
untrusted interfaces each with their own policy, and over 50 network
applications. It also supports centralised administration of multiple
remote firewalls (meta-firewall).

[030] - Gnome-GCJ 0.15.0
  by Oskar Liljeblad (http://freshmeat.net/users/osk/)
  Wednesday, August 1st 2001 12:42

Categories: Desktop Environment :: Gnome, Software Development ::
Libraries

About: Gnome-GCJ is a set of GTK+ and GNOME bindings for Java. It compiles
with the GCJ compiler (part of egcs) and uses the GCJ runtime library
libgcj. GCJ is capable of compiling Java source code to native machine
code, which makes Java code almost as fast as C++ code. As the interface
between Java and GTK+, CNI (Cygnus Native Interface) and C++ will be used
instead of the more traditional JNI and C. This means that support for
other Java runtimes has been sacrificed in favour of GCJ and its faster
CNI.

Changes: This is a maintenance release to make it possible to compile
Gnome-GCJ with GCC 3.0.

[043] - MOSIX 1.1.2 for Linux 2.4.7 (Linux 2.4.*)
  by AB (http://freshmeat.net/users/amnon/)
  Wednesday, August 1st 2001 17:30

Category: System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: MOSIX is a software package to enhance the Linux kernel with cluster
computing capabilities. It allows an arbitrarily-sized cluster of PCs to
work cooperatively as if part of a single system. To run in a MOSIX cluster
there is no need to modify applications, to link applications with any
library, or even to assign processes to different nodes. MOSIX does its job
automatically and transparently. The core of MOSIX are adaptive resource
management algorithms that monitor and respond to uneven work distribution
among the nodes. These algorithms use preemptive process migration to
assign and reassign processes among the nodes, to continuously take
advantage of the best available cluster resources. The MOSIX algorithms are
geared for maximal performance, overhead-free scalability, and ease of use.

Changes: This release contains several MFS bug fixes (0 block size and
MFS-server oops). Bugs with "OOB'' and "overload'' when MOSIX is not active
have been fixed. Details about /proc/{pid}/cantmove have been added to the
MOSIX(7) manual page.

[044] - MPEG4IP 0.7
  by cahighlander (http://freshmeat.net/users/cahighlander/)
  Wednesday, August 1st 2001 17:36

About: The MPEG4IP package provides a set of tools to encode, stream, and
playback audio and video. It uses the MPEG-4 standards for audio and video,
and the IETF standards for streaming. The included player can either
playback from local MP4 file or stream from a remote server via RTP/RTSP.

Changes: A live encoding program (mp4live) which allows real-time
production of MP4 files and/or network transmission of audio and video has
been added. Player synchronization of audio and video for OSS supported
platforms has been improved, as well as OpenDivX encoder performance.
Interleaved audio RTP payload format support has been added. A number of
bugs with the MP4 file library have been fixed, as well as compilation on
Windows platforms.

[045] - multiCD 1.6.3
  by Dan (http://freshmeat.net/users/therealdan/)
  Wednesday, August 1st 2001 12:59

Category: System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: multiCD provides an easy way to backup a large number of files to
multiple CDs. Give multiCD the files/directories you want backed up and it
will create as many CDs as it needs to, prompting the user to put in a new
disc whenever needed. It can be configured to run in a multi-threading
mode, where it will burn one image to a disc while it is copying files to
another image. This feature can be disabled for slower machines.

Changes: The permissions on newly created image files were being set using
the default as specified by the current umask. This had the possibility of
creating world-readable image files. This security issue was fixed.

[052] - Perl Site Tools 0.74
  by Steve Slaven (http://freshmeat.net/users/bpk/)
  Wednesday, August 1st 2001 16:28

Categories: Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries,
Software Development :: Libraries

About: The site tools package has classes to support a standard look and
feel through templates that support somewhat advanced functionality like
object method binding, custom escape/formatting functions, and basic
looping and conditionals. It also supports SQL forms with foreign key
handling with drop boxes or lists, and multiple field types like
checkboxes, text boxes, and text areas. Add/delete/edit functionality is
handled by the Form class. Tables can be created in the same way, and
support auto-sorting by using hyperlinked headers, and next/prev handling.
Both forms and tables can be bound to templates to adjust the look and
feel or layout, without losing any functionality.

Changes: Many feature enhancements were made. Lots more configuration
options were added to the SQLTable. The SQLTable also knows about asc/desc
sorting and allows both for any bound column name. SQLForm has been cleaned
up and some utility functions were added. A new class, CrashNotify, was
added to allow an easy and quick way to hook the die signal to send an
email to you when a script crashes. The notification email includes all the
options passed from the browser, the environment, and the actual error
message. Some docmentation has been updated.

[055] - PhotoGen 1.5
  by Jeremy Shawley (http://freshmeat.net/users/jshawley/)
  Wednesday, August 1st 2001 03:19

About: PhotoGen is a bash shell script that creates photo galleries from a
directory of JPEG and GIF images. The script will generate thumbnails from
the large images, let you choose a background color for the gallery, and
also let you add captions to each thumbnail image.

Changes: Photogen now asks how many thumbnails you would like per page. It
also now has support for creating multiple pages. It takes the number of
images you want per page, and will then create as many pages as needed to
finish the gallery. The user interface has been cleaned up, and the error
handling has been improved. Finally, you can now choose the name for the
default HTML page.

[060] - PhysicsFS 0.1.0
  by icculus (http://freshmeat.net/users/icculus/)
  Wednesday, August 1st 2001 11:10

Categories: Software Development :: Libraries, System :: Filesystems

About: PhysicsFS is a library to provide abstract access to various
archives. The programmer defines a "write directory" on the physical
filesystem. No file writing done through the PhysicsFS API can leave that
write directory, for security. For file reading, the programmer lists
directories and archives that form a "search path". Once the search path
is defined, it becomes a single, transparent, hierarchical filesystem.
This makes for easy access to ZIP files in the same way as you access a
file directly on the disk, and it makes it easy to ship a new archive
that will override a previous archive on a per-file basis. Symbolic links
can be disabled, for added safety. Finally, PhysicsFS gives you a
platform- abstracted means to determine if CD-ROMs are available, the
user's home directory, where in the real filesystem your program is
running, etc.

[064] - Postfix 20010228-pl4 (Stable)
  by Patrick Lenz (http://freshmeat.net/users/scoop/)
  Wednesday, August 1st 2001 06:56

About: Postfix is an attempt to provide an alternative to the widely-used
Sendmail program. Postfix attempts to be fast, easy to administer, and
hopefully secure, while at the same time being sendmail compatible enough
to not upset your users.

Changes: Updated LDAP client module, new LDAP query filter patterns: %u

smtpd_whatever_restrictions clobbered intermediate results when switching
between sender and recipient address restrictions, the not yet announced
DUNNO access table lookup result did not prevent lookups with substrings of
the same lookup key, trim trailing whitespace from regexp and pcre
right-hand sides, eliminated duplicate IP addresses after expansion of
hostnames in $inet_interfaces, so that Postfix does not suddenly refuse to

[088] - Yet Another SQL*Plus Replacement 1.80

Categories: Database, Database :: Front-Ends, Office/Business, Software
Development, System :: Systems Administration

About: YASQL is an open source Oracle command line interface. It features a
much kinder alternative to SQL*Plus's user interface. This is meant to be a
complete replacement for SQL*Plus when dealing with ad hoc queries and
general database interfacing. It adds features such as full ReadLine
support for command history and tab completion, alternate output methods,
table, list, CSV, redirection and piping of query results, query editing,
scripting, and easy administrative data dictionary commands.

Changes: Compatibility issues with the data dictionary in Oracle 7 have
been fixed. Compound indexes are now ordered. Objects from other schemas no
longer conflict . declare and end in will only match if on a blank line.
'/' terminator will only match if at the end of a line. Edit temp file now
appends '.sql' to the end for syntax highlighting. The SQLPATH environment
variable is now used when searching for scripts. Terminal setup is now
after script parsing, so that it will work when run under cron.
