[001] - auth postgresql 0.6 (Development)
  by Alessandro GARDICH (http://freshmeat.net/users/gardich/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 11:27

auth postgresql provides the ability keep all user information in a
PostgreSQL database instead the plain text files that are normally used.
This is also very useful for improving the performance of NIS+.

Changes: This version includes support for passwd, group, and shadow
databases, as well as support for multiple servers.

[002] - Backup Copy 4.1.0 (Default)
  by Yuuki NINOMIYA (http://freshmeat.net/users/yuukininomiya/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 11:52

Backup Copy allows you to keep a mirror of your data. It copies multiple
files faster than standard cp. Its key features include copying "new files
only" and deleting files that no longer exist in the source when copying
over a previous backup. When a file is overwritten or deleted due to a new
backup, you have the option of trashing those files in a trash bin,
providing you a backup of your backup.

Changes: This release features some bug fixes, French translations, and
support for detection/modification of permissions and ownership.

[003] - Balsa 1.1.3 (Development)
  by Matthew Guenther (http://freshmeat.net/users/mguenthe/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 01:06

Balsa is a Gnome e-mail client supporting POP3, IMAP, and local mail
delivery. It can be compiled with multi-threading support for faster
response, and can do nifty things like read your GnomeCard address book,
use LDAP, and render HTML mail.

Changes: MDN reply support, handling IMAP timeout, Maildir and MH mailboxes
creation, creation of temporary files with safe permissions, and close
buttons.

[004] - beancounter 0.3.0 (Default)
  by Dirk Eddelbuettel (http://freshmeat.net/users/eddelbuettel/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 05:53

Beancounter enables stock market data analysis and performance evaluation.
It has two main modes. The first is data gathering: both current data (e.g.
closing prices, high, low, volume, ...) and historical price data can be
retrieved and stored in an SQL database via easy command-line operations.
The second mode is data analysis based on the stored data. Beancounter is
implemented as Perl module and a Perl command-line frontend to the module.
Beancounter supports markets in North America, Europe, and Asia.

Changes: This release includes a new 'risk' command to create reports with
value-at-risk (VaR) percentile estimates using the standard (parametric)
approach as well as a non-parametric quantile estimate, and can also
compute marginal value-at-risk. New features include an option to override
faulty dates supplied by Yahoo! Finance, an 'allreports' command for
creating dayend, status, and risk reports all together, status and risk
reports for jobs run by 'dailyjob', and some other small improvements.

  by Gael MARTINEZ (http://freshmeat.net/users/gaelik/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 01:08

The Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND) implements an Internet name server
for Unix operating systems. The BIND consists of a server (or `daemon')
called `named' and a resolver library. A name server is a network service
that enables clients to name resources or objects and share this
information with other objects in the network.

Changes: This is a maintenance release, fixing a number of bugs in BIND
9.1.0.

[010] - DarkPortal 0.1.4alpha (Development)
  by Fred Hirsch (http://freshmeat.net/users/webmosher/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 12:40

DarkPortal is a project founded to create a Web portal system similar in
scope to PHPNuke and PHPJ00K. It is based on the user interface style of
Slashdot and other news/portal systems. It uses a modular core as a base
for adding pluggable modules to facilitate content creation and management.
Its primary goals are full separation of content from code, fully modular
portal plugins with standardized APIs, portability and database
abstraction, user level theme selection and plugin module selection, and a
modular user/group hierarchy with multiple levels of moderation and admin
capabilities.

Changes: Ths is a complete rewrite of the template code to make it better
follow the original vision of a dynamic zone/block builder for a portal
site. Numerous minor bugfixes, release notes, and an installation guide are
also included.

  by kueller (http://freshmeat.net/users/kueller/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 05:47

Diamond is a Java/Jess program that simulates a robot fight. Instead of
letting each player control his robot, Diamond requires them to write a
Jess script that will tell the robot what to do under what circumstances.
It's been designed to be as modular as possible: you can write your own
weapons, modify the program's output, and write external libraries for it.

[016] - Freenet 0.3.8 (Default)
  by Ian Clarke (http://freshmeat.net/users/sanity/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 06:05

Freenet is a peer-to-peer network designed to allow the distribution of
information over the Internet in an efficient manner, without fear of
censorship. It is completely decentralized (there is no person or computer
essential to its operation), meaning that Freenet cannot be attacked like
centralized peer-to-peer systems such as Napster. Freenet also employs
intelligent routing and caching to learn to route requests more
efficiently, automatically mirror popular data, make network flooding
almost impossible, and move data to where it is in greatest demand.

Changes: This release includes some efficient improvements in datastore,
the addition of the Freenet Client Protocol interface and XML-RPC
interface, improved bandwidth management, improvements to service
launching, and various bugfixes.

[029] - Hotkeys 0.5.4 (Default)
  by Anthony Wong (http://freshmeat.net/users/ypwong/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 14:33

The HotKeys daemon listens for the "special" hotkeys that you won't
normally use on your Internet/Multimedia keyboards. The buttons perform
their intended behaviors, such as volume up and down, mute the speaker, or
launch applications. It features an XML-based keycode configuration file
format, which makes it possible to define the hotkeys to launch any
programs you want.

Changes: More rigorous library checking in the configure script, new
SK-2505 and Process MCK-800 keyboards support, and if the volume +/- keys
are pressed continuously, the volume change will become larger and larger.

[030] - HPA's TFTP Daemon 0.16 (Default)
  by H. Peter Anvin (http://freshmeat.net/users/hpa/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 02:40

HPA's TFTP Daemon is a port of the OpenBSD TFTP server (which in turn is
the stock BSD TFTP server with a number of security improvements) to
non-BSD operating systems (primarily Linux, but it should work on most
modern Unices). It has been enhanced to support TFTP options and better
handle broken embedded TFTP clients.

Changes: tftp-hpa-0.15 reintroduced a whole slew of bugs that had been
fixed in release 0.14 due to a CVS mix-up. This release reintegrates the
fixes, and includes an additional fix for "TFTP PUT".

[031] - HTML::Mason 1.0.1 (Default)
  by LiM (http://freshmeat.net/users/lim/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 02:24

HTML::Mason is a full-featured web site development and delivery system.
Mason allows web pages and sites to be constructed from shared, reusable
building blocks called components. Components contain a mix of Perl and
HTML, and can call each other and pass values back and forth like
subroutines. Components increase modularity and eliminate repetitive work.
HTML::Mason is most powerful when used in conjunction with mod_perl, but
can be used in standalone applications as well.

Changes: This release introduces the ability to configure Mason entirely
from the httpd.conf without a separate handler script.

[046] - mod_ssl 2.8.2-1.3.19 (Default)
  by Ralf S. Engelschall (http://freshmeat.net/users/rse/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 06:04

mod_ssl provides provides strong cryptography for the Apache 1.3 webserver
via the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL v2/v3) and Transport Layer Security (TLS
v1). It is based on the SSL/TLS toolkit OpenSSL and supports all SSL/TLS
related functionality, including RSA and DSA/DH cipher support, X.509 CRL
checking, etc. Additionally it provides special Apache related facilities
like DBM and shared memory based inter-process SSL session caching. per-URL
SSL session renegotiations, DSO support, etc.

Changes: This release includes the move of the Shared Memory Cyclic Buffer
session cache variant from 'experimental' to 'production', modifications to
Win32's specific SSL_recvwithtime() function to use the same retry logic as
SSL_writewithtimeout(), more robust mutex handling by retrying the
semaphore-based operations in interrupt situations, logging of OpenSSL
error messages if the RSA temporary key(s) cannot be generated, fixes to
return DECLINED instead of OK in the mod_ssl Auth handler, fixes for
certification DN handling under EBCDIC platforms, various fixes to
configure.bat and Makefile.win32 to make mod_ssl work once again under
Win32, checking that the default path (/usr/include) is never added to
CFLAGS, support for IPC semaphores under Tru64 5.x, avoiding of casting
warnings by using "unsigned long" type instead of "unsigned int" in the
EAPI macros AP_CTX_XXXX, extra checks so that ssl_expr_parse.[ch] and
ssl_expr_scan.c are not regenerated for regular users, and a mention in the
INSTALL document that building OpenSSL with 'no-threads' increases
performance without side-effects because Apache 1.3 is never

[047] - mp3mover.pl 0.85 (Default)
  by James Maddison (http://freshmeat.net/users/tuxjay/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 00:12

mp3mover.pl is a Perl script which attempts to rename MP3 files so that
they conform to a consistent user-defined naming scheme. It inspects every
MP3 in a directory and attempts to work out which part of the MP3 is the
artist's name, album name, etc. It then renames each MP3 to follow the
user's naming scheme, optionally creating a directory structure and writing
an idv3.1 tag to the MP3 based on the information it obtains. mp3mover.pl
was designed to be very flexible and can be highly customized through the
use of a large number of command line options and a per user configuration
file.

script no longer attempts to search through directories when it doesn't
have to, and new options.

mysqlcppapi is a C++ wrapper for the MySQL C API library. mysqlcppapi is a
branch of the MySQL++ project, but it has diverged significantly with these
aims: a) Optimisation should happen after the design is mature, and that
optimisation should be targeted. b) There should not be too many ways to do
the same thing. c) The code should be maintainable.

the Header guards are prefixed.

oftpd is designed to be as secure as an anonymous FTP server can possibly

  Friday, March 30th 2001 14:28

psycopg is a PostgreSQL database adapter for the Python programming
language (just like pygresql and popy). Its main advantages are that it
supports the full Python DBAPI 2.0 and it is thread safe at level 2. It was
designed for heavily multi-threaded applications that create and destroy
lots of cursors and make a conspicuous number of concurrent INSERTs or

  by Rob Tillotson (http://freshmeat.net/users/cq/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 16:17

Pyrite Publisher (formerly Doc Toolkit) is a set of tools for building
content in formats compatible with the Palm computing platform. Currently
it is focused on building e-texts in the de facto standard "Doc" format,
but its architecture will allow for expanded media support in the future.

ASCII to Doc databases, and can be extended in Python. It can fetch its
input from the Web or FTP, has support for TealDoc tags, and can set
bookmarks directly into the output database.

[071] - Siege 1.33 (Default)
  by Jeffrey Fulmer (http://freshmeat.net/users/jdfulmer/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 11:39

Siege is an open source regression test and benchmark utility. It can
stress test a single URL with a user defined number of simulated users, or
it can read many URLs into memory and stress them simultaneously. The
program reports the total number of hits recorded, bytes transferred,
response time, concurrency, and return status. Most features are
configurable with command line options, which also include default values
to minimize the complexity of the programs's invocation.

Changes: Time-based testing was added. This new feature is an enhancement
to the existing options, not a replacement for any single option.

[072] - smbfax 1.2 (Default)
  by Craig Kelley (http://freshmeat.net/users/ink/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 01:03

smbfax is a Unix server which allows you to print via Samba from a Windows
client to a hylafax-controlled faxmodem on your server without any
additional Win32 software for the client. It's as easy as File-Print from
an application, choose the network fax printer, then check your email's
INBOX. You can also view and delete jobs by the standard Windows methods.

Changes: A fix for a situation in which a users can send faxes without
having an account on the mailing server (appended e-mail address), fixes
for filters to be more liberal in the characters they accept, updated
documentation, more comments in the code, and support for SMTP so that the
mailx program is no longer needed/used.

[073] - SpeedyCGI 2.11 (Default)
  by Sam Horrocks (http://freshmeat.net/users/samh/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 05:49

SpeedyCGI is a way to run CGI perl scripts persistently, which usually
makes them run much more quickly. Converting scripts to use SpeedyCGI is in
most cases as simple has changing the interpreter line at the top of the
script. After the script is initially run, instead of exiting, SpeedyCGI
keeps the perl interpreter running in memory. During subsequent runs, this
interpreter is used to handle new requests, instead of starting a new perl
interpreter for each execution.

Changes: This release fixes bugs relating to the new Group option (exit was
causing the whole interpreter to exit), a bug where mod_speedycgi could run
the wrong script, and a bug where sh-bang options could be mixed up between
scripts. New features include automated mod_speedycgi testing, a
workaround for a Solaris 2.5.1 bug that was causing the mungefds and touch
tests to fail, a new variable $CGI::SpeedyCGI::i_am_speedy for a quick way
to check if the script is running under speedycgi, and a few new methods:
add_shutdown_handler, shutdown_now, and shutdown_next_time.

[074] - sunclock 3.34 (Default)
  by Jean-Pierre Demailly (http://freshmeat.net/users/demailly/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 06:06

Sunclock is a sophisticated clock for the X Window system. It displays a
map of the Earth and shows which portion is illuminated by the sun. In
addition to providing local time for the default timezone, it also displays
GMT time, legal and solar time of major cities, their latitude and
longitude, sunrise and sunset, and the mutual distances of arbitrary
locations on Earth. Sunclock can display meridians, parallels, tropics, and
arctic circles. It has builtin functions that accelerate the speed of time
and show the evolution of seasons.

Changes: The zoom widget is now easier to use and offers more efficient
functions, related GUI and command line options have been added, and a lot
of minor bugs have been fixed.

[075] - Syslinux 1.54 (Default)
  by H. Peter Anvin (http://freshmeat.net/users/hpa/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 02:35

SYSLINUX is a boot loader for the Linux operating system which operates off
MS-DOS floppies. It is intended to simplify first-time installation of
Linux, rescue disks, and other uses for boot floppies. A SYSLINUX floppy
can be manipulated using standard MS-DOS (or any other OS that can access
an MS-DOS filesystem) tools once it has been created, and requires only a ~
7K DOS program or ~ 13K Linux program to create it in the first place. It
also includes PXELINUX, a program to boot off a network server using a boot
PROM compatible with the Intel PXE (Pre-Execution Environment)
specification.

Changes: This release removes the implicit addition of "auto" to the
default command line, due to it causing some problems, and also includes
fixes for various broken systems.

[076] - syslog-ng 1.5.5 (Development)
  by bazsi (http://freshmeat.net/users/bazsi/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 16:27

syslog-ng, as the name shows, is a syslogd replacement, but with new
functionality for the new generation. The original syslogd allows messages
only to be sorted based on priority/facility pairs; syslog-ng adds the
possibility to filter based on message contents using regular expressions.
The new configuration scheme is intuitive and powerful. Forwarding logs
over TCP and remembering all forwarding hops makes it ideal for firewalled
environments.

Changes: A new DNS cache and output file templates, and a fix for a SIGHUP
problem.

[080] - Vocal 1.2.0 (Default)
  by Ian Cahoon (http://freshmeat.net/users/icahoon/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 16:25

The Vovida Open Communication Application Library (VOCAL) aims to
facilitate the adoption of VoIP in the marketplace. VOCAL provides the
software and tools needed to build VoIP features, applications, and
services. The software in VOCAL includes a SIP-based Redirect Server,
Feature Server, Provisioning Server, Policy Server, and Marshal Proxy along
with protocol translators from SIP to H.323 and SIP to MGCP. These modules
are designed to act as building blocks to help you create better, faster,
and stronger VoIP systems.

Changes: Solaris support, sound card support in the SIP user agent,
provision server changes to improve thread performance and general
efficiency, allowing Call Blocking to be entered in the System
Administration GUI (this prefix is prepended to all numbers in the Call
Blocking Call Processing Language script), ability to edit user aliases in
place, and redundancy support in the voicemail server. When setting up
Call Forwarding features for users, the Administrator does not have to
enter the full URL for the forwarding number; it is acceptable to enter
only the user name.

[083] - YaRET 0.6.5 (Default)
  by Gryn Garkin (http://freshmeat.net/users/gryn/)
  Friday, March 30th 2001 21:14

YaRET is a Perl script that automates the ripping, encoding, and tagging of
CDs. It uses the Audio::CD Perl module (which requires libcdaudio) for CDDB
lookups, cdparanoia or cdda2wav for ripping, lame or bladeenc to encode the
wav file, and the MP3::Info Perl module for tagging. It utilizes CDDB
lookups to automate the naming and tagging of songs as they are ripped, and
saves time by moving the mp3 encoding to the background.

Changes: Support to normalize MP3 files with normalize, minor code
cleanups, cleaning up the Web page, and fixes for a few minor bugs.
