Rethinking Business in Light of Open Source: A BRIE/OSDN Symposium

On April 18, 2001 OSDN, Open Source Development Network, in collaboration
with BRIE, Berkley Roundtable on the International Economy, will hold a
one-day symposium in San Francisco, California to examine and debate the
Open Source Movement and how it is challenging our notions of competition,
collaboration and intellectual property.

Leading an Open Source project is no simple task, as many of you know
firsthand. Trying to manage all the bug reports, keep the developers in
line, and stay on top of the mailing lists while still trying to have a
life can be a very difficult, yet most rewarding experience.

  Saturday, March 10th 2001 07:33

BurgerSpace is a game in which you are a chef and you must walk over
hamburger ingredients (buns, meat, and lettuce) to make them fall from
floor to floor, until they end up in the plates at the bottom of the
screen. It requires X11 in a 16-bit color mode.

[009] - cal_up.sh 4.2.2 (Default)
  by dhunley (http://freshmeat.net/users/dhunley/)
  Saturday, March 10th 2001 20:09

cal_up.sh watches the Caldera FTP site for new updates to whatever version
of OpenLinux you are running and automagically downloads them. It then
optionally installs the updates, optionally reboots, and mails you with a
complete log of its actions.

Changes: This release adds code to deal with Caldera's newest habit of not
giving the full upgrade command in their README files. (See update 039 for
eDesktop 2.4 as an example.) All users should once again upgrade.

[010] - CDDB.py 1.3 (Default)
  by Ben Gertzfield (http://freshmeat.net/users/che/)
  Saturday, March 10th 2001 19:52

CDDB.py provides an easy way for Python programs to fetch track and disc
information on audio CDs. This information is acquired from CDDB, a very
large online database of track listings and other information on audio CDs.
Included is a C extension module to enable Python to read track listings
from audio CDs under Linux, Solaris, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and Win32. The
interface to this extension module is portable and is intended to be ported
to other OSes easily.

Changes: This release changes the default to use FreeDB, adds Win32 fixes,
and has been recompiled to work with Python 2.0. A new DiscID.open()
cross-platform "do-what-I-mean" call has been added to open the CD audio
device opaquely. It's now possible to fake client identification.

  Saturday, March 10th 2001 20:13

CISH is a configuration shell for Linux machines that are used as network
routers. It provides configuration commands that handle network devices,
access control, and routing. The command syntax and CLI closely mimic the
behaviour of Cisco network devices.

Changes: This release is entirely ported to the Linux 2.2 kernel
architecture and the LRP distribution system. It has full support for
extended access lists, ethernet bridging, PPP, IP masquerading, and a bunch
of services. LRP packages and a ready-to-run boot image are now available.

[012] - Common C++ 1.3.3 (Default)
  by David Sugar (http://freshmeat.net/users/davidsugar/)
  Saturday, March 10th 2001 20:21

Common C++ is a highly portable C++ class library meant primarily for the
development of portable threaded applications. A separate source tree is
maintained for both pthread "POSIX" targets (Linux, xBSD, Solaris, etc),
and for Win32 targets. The goal is to provide a truly common C++ framework
for writing portable threaded applications that do not require a huge
amount of runtime overhead to support, and hence can make C++ and threads
suitable even for the development of trivial servers and applications.

Changes: This release adds fixups for Win32 (Borland) and FreeBSD builds,
new macros to the test version, and a contributed class for argument
parsing. Keydata identifiers have been expanded to 32 chars.

[015] - Dynamic Probes 2.0 (Default)
  by Steve Fox (http://freshmeat.net/users/drfickle/)
  Saturday, March 10th 2001 19:30

Dynamic Probes (Dprobes) is a generic and pervasive system debugging
facility that will operate under the most extreme software conditions such
as debugging a deep-rooted operating system problem in a live environment.
Dprobes allows the insertion of fully automated breakpoints or probepoints
anywhere in the system and user space. Each probepoint has an associated
set of probe instructions that are interpreted when the probe fires. These
instructions allow memory and CPU registers to be examined and altered
using conditional logic. When the probe command terminates, prior to
returning to the probed code, a syslog record may be optionally generated.

Changes: A new watchpoint probes feature allows probes to be fired on
specific type of memory accesses (execute/write/read or write/io), ability
to use the debug registers available on Intel x86 processors, new RPN
instructions (divide/remainder and propagate bit/zero), ability to
reference kernel data symbolically in the probe program files, memory
logging instructions like "log mrf" write the fault location in the log
buffer in case a page fault occurs when accessing the concerned memory
area, ability to save logs by using the new keyword logonfault=yes even if
the probed instruction faults, bugfixes in the interpreter, a validity
check for the selector in segmented to flat address conversion in cases
where the selector references the GDT, and log memory and log ascii
functions don't log if the logmax was set to zero.

[017] - fcron 1.0.2 (Default)
  by Thibault Godouet (http://freshmeat.net/users/fcron/)
  Saturday, March 10th 2001 11:37

Fcron is a periodical command scheduler which aims at replacing vixie cron,
so it implements most of its functionality. It does not assume that your
system is running either all the time or regularly: you can, for instance,
tell fcron to execute tasks every x hours y minutes of system uptime or to
do a job only once in a specified interval of time. You can also set a nice
value to a job, run it depending on the system load average, and much more.

Changes: The user for whom a job is run is now logged. The installation
script is now more explicit about what it is going to do. A boolean value
can now also be set by "yes" and "no". Bugfixes: the bootrun option works
again, shell variables containing underscores used to be rejected, the
installation script previously didn't check if user fcron was in group
fcron, in which case fcrontab doesn't work correctly (it cannot, in that
case, read the fcrontabs for non-privileged users).

libhtmlparse is an HTML parsing library written in ANSI C that helps you
parse HTML documents. It calls certain callbacks that you define whenever
something in the document is found.

Changes: This release merges changes by Christoph Zurnieden, including a
code overhaul and entities support, and also includes automatic passthrough
for stuff in <script> tags, as well as a fix for an off-by-one error
in parseEntities causing \021 to be sent to the callback

[034] - libtecla 1.2.3 (Default)
  by Martin Shepherd (http://freshmeat.net/users/mshepherd/)
  Saturday, March 10th 2001 19:32

The Tecla library provides programs with interactive command line editing
facilities, similar to those of the unix tcsh shell. It supports recall and
editing of previously entered command lines, TAB completion of file names
and application specific tokens, and in-line wild-card expansion of
filenames. The optionally reentrant modules which perform TAB completion
and wild-card expansion are also available separately for general use. The
library is smaller, more modular, makes more efficient use of the heap, and
has a less restrictive license than GNU readline.

Changes: Configuration has been automated with the addition of a standard
autoconf configure script. This also adds the capability to compile shared
libraries where supported. Two bugs have also been fixed. One stopped the
library from outputting control sequences to terminals on all big-endian
machines except those running Solaris, and another caused the omission of a
newline under HP-UX when the user hit enter.

[041] - Net::Server 0.48 (Devel)
  by Paul T Seamons (http://freshmeat.net/users/rhandom/)
  Saturday, March 10th 2001 11:22

Net::Server is an extensible class-oriented Internet server written in
Perl. The base Net::Server class contains the bulk of the functionality but
can easily be extended with subclasses, process hooks, or overridden
methods. The subclasses included with the distribution include single
process, forking server, pre-forking server, and inetd server. All
subclasses (except for inetd) allow for binding to and accepting on
multiple ports. It has the ability to read a conf file, take command line
arguments, chroot to a different directory, become another user, become
another group, maintain a pid file, and specify log file. Subclasses
contain extended functionality such as min_servers, max_servers, and
spare_servers. Written to be light but powerful, Net::Server is intended to
be the back end layer of FTP, SMTP, HTTP, ad serving, POP3, and other
services, with protocol-specific functions layered on top.

Changes: This release adds catching of more signals in the parent process,
allowing for better shutdown of children, save pid_file creation for after
chroot, and a change to another user to make sure the Server has access to
pid_file.

[047] - sysstat 3.3.6 (Default)
  by Sébastien Godard (http://freshmeat.net/users/godard/)
  Saturday, March 10th 2001 05:39

The sysstat package contains the sar, mpstat, and iostat commands for
Linux. The sar command collects and reports system activity information.
This information can also be saved in a system activity file for future
inspection. The iostat command reports CPU statistics and I/O statistics
for tty devices and disks. The statistics reported by sar concern I/O
transfer rates, paging activity, process-related activites, interrupts,
network activity, memory and swap space utilization, CPU utilization,
kernel activities, and TTY statistics, among others. Both UP and SMP
machines are fully supported.

Changes: This release includes paging statistics (sar -B), load averages
and queue length statistics (sar -q), per device statistics (sar -d),
better accuracy when computing the average for some statistics, display of
all the contents of a daily data file when the count parameter is not given
on the command line, more aggressive checking of command line options,
fixes so iostat no longer freezes if -c and -d options are used together, a
fix for a bug that prevented iostat from displaying more than an average of
three devices with 2.4 kernels, a check added to ensure that sar and sadc
commands are consistent, and some isag command updates.

[053] - tsocks 1.7Beta2 (Development)
  by Delius (http://freshmeat.net/users/delius/)
  Saturday, March 10th 2001 19:35

tsocks provides transparent network access through a SOCKS version 4 or 5
proxy (usually on a firewall). tsocks intercepts the calls applications
make to create TCP connections and determines if they can be directly
accessed or need the SOCKS server. If they need the SOCKS server they
connection is negotiated with the server transparently to the application.
This allows existing applications to use SOCKS without recompilation or
modification. tsocks is a wrapper library for the libc connect() call.

SOCKS servers as hostnames, automated configuration using the GNU autoconf
suite, and corrections for return code and errno issues.

[054] - twin 0.3.8 (Default)
  by Massimiliano Ghilardi (http://freshmeat.net/users/paperinik/)
  Saturday, March 10th 2001 19:45

Twin is a text-mode window environment. It turns a text terminal into a
X11-style display with window manager, terminal windows, and can also serve
as display for remote applications. Each terminal window provides the
functions of a text-mode Linux console. Twin runs on the Linux console,
X11, libggi, and itself. It supports multiple simultaneous displays, and
can attach/detach each display on the fly.

Changes: This release fixes a compile problem with rcrun.c, the ~/.twinrc
"Resize" command, problems in redrawing gadgets on non-top windows, and a
libTw++.h listeners bug. It makes the terminal emulator work again as
module, and adds various fixes contributed by the Linux PLD team. Among the
new features are: a new kind of window using expose events, socket protocol
translation to allow connections from clients with different data sizes and
endianity, and display of window size during interactive resize.
