[001] - ACP modem (Mwave) driver 20010206 Source (Stable)
  by Steve Fox (http://freshmeat.net/users/drfickle/)
Monday, February 12th 2001 15:09

This is a set of Linux drivers for the ACP modem (Mwave), a WinModem. It is
composed of a loadable kernel module and a user level application. Together
these components support direct attachment to public switched telephone
networks (PSTNs) and support selected world wide countries. This driver
provides support for the IBM ThinkPad 600E. The modem also supports the
standard communications port interface (ttySx) and is compatible with the
Hayes AT Command Set.

Changes: The ACP modem driver code has been released under the GNU GPL
license.

[002] - AGT 0.83 (Default)
  by Andy (http://freshmeat.net/users/ajg/)
Monday, February 12th 2001 12:29

AGT is a simple frontend to iptables. It allows all options to be specified
in a few configuration files, letting you to make complex changes to a
firewall in a few seconds.

Changes: This release fixes many installation problems, as well as cleaning
up some of the code. The config files are more generic, with more emphasis
put on masquerading than on filtering. The compilation process has also
changed, scrapping the autoconf process for a simpler 'make', 'make
install'.

[005] - Apache Toolbox 1.5.0 (Default)
  by IO (http://freshmeat.net/users/bandrews/)
Monday, February 12th 2001 01:46

Apache Toolbox provides a means to easily compile Apache SSL, PHP, MySQL,
Jakarta, a large number of modules (52, static or as DSOs), and gd
libraries with PNG support. It is fully customizable and menu-driven.
Everything is compiled from source, and wget is used to download any
missing modules. It can also check for RPMs that might cause problems and
create an RPM with your selections.

Changes: The script will now use RPMs instead of suggesting you remove the
RPM and install from source. mod_layout, mod_frontpage, mod_gzip, and
libmcrypt were updated, and many small bugfixes were made.

[012] - Deciduous Evolution 1.0.1 (Stable)
  by Jim Susinno (http://freshmeat.net/users/susinno/)
Monday, February 12th 2001 01:24

Deciduous Evolution uses a 3D recursive algorithm for drawing binary trees
using intersecting cylinders in 3D space. All adjustable aspects of this
algorithm are parameterized, and these parameters are evolved using a
genetic algorithm. Statistics describing various metrics of the tree are
instantiated, and fitness is calculated based on a number of weighted
functions of these statistics. The goal of this project is to manipulate
these weights to most accurately reflect the laws of nature, and observe
the resulting trees. Using only a simple set of parameters, a recursive
binary tree's growth can strikingly resemble that found in nature.

Changes: The Makefile explicitly includes -L/usr/X11R6/lib/.

[013] - dhcpcd 1.3.19-pl6 (Default)
  by Pavel Roskin (http://freshmeat.net/users/proskin/)
Monday, February 12th 2001 15:02

dhcpcd is an RFC2131-, RFC2132-, and RFC1541-compliant DHCP client daemon.
It gets an IP address and other information from the DHCP server,
automatically configures the network interface, and tries to renew the
lease time according to RFC2131 or RFC1541.

Changes: Fixes for compilation with 2.0.x kernels, and addition of 0x0 to
the end of ClientID and ClassID options in the DHCP message.

Monday, February 12th 2001 16:29

Distributed MP3/Ogg Encoder is a distributed MP3/Ogg encoder/ripper
front-end. To use this you run one script to rip a CD into .wav files, and
you run the other one on as many computers as you have. This second script
examines the .wav files, encodes them, and writes them out as .mp3 or .ogg
files. It has FreeDB support. Requires a ripper program, an encoder
program, and a few Perl modules.

[015] - djbdns 1.05 (Default)
  by Olivier L. Müller (http://freshmeat.net/users/swix/)
Monday, February 12th 2001 01:30

djbdns is a collection of Domain Name System tools. Security is one of the
primary motivations for the development of djbdns. Every step of the design
and implementation has been carefully evaluated from a security
perspective. The djbdns package has been structured to minimize the
complexity of security-critical code. dnscache is immune to cache
poisoning. It is advisable to use the package as a secure alternative to
BIND.

Changes: This version responds differently to *-class queries, and to AXFR
requests, to placate a few broken clients. The servers now log starting
messages.

[017] - Dnsmasq 0.7 (Default)
  by Simon Kelley (http://freshmeat.net/users/simonkelley/)
Monday, February 12th 2001 12:46

Dnsmasq is small utility designed to provide DNS (domain name) services to
a small network connected to the internet via a NAT (network address
translation, AKA ip-masquerade) firewall and a modem connection. Since a
NAT firewall will pass DNS queries it's perfectly possible for all the
machines on such a network to be configured to talk directly to the ISP's
name server, but doing that has problems such as long timeouts when not
connected to the ISP. Dnsmasq provides a better solution which solves the
problems.

Changes: This release fixes DOS problems from "poison packets" and adds
various small bugfixes and features.

Escher is a collection of libraries for X Window System written purely in
Java. It consists of an X11 protocol implementation (similar to Xlib for
C/C++), and its extensions including GLX, and the OpenGL rendering
protocol.

[019] - ferm 0.0.16 (Default)
  by sofar (http://freshmeat.net/users/sofar/)
Monday, February 12th 2001 16:57

ferm is a tool to maintain and setup complicated firewall rules. It allows
one to reduce the tedious task of carefully inserting rules and chains,
thus enabling the firewall administrator to spend more time on developing
good rules, and less time on the proper implementation of those rules.
These rules will be executed by the preferred kernel interface, such as
ipchains and iptables, and in one pass. Firewall rules can also be split
into different files and loaded at will.

Changes: Several iptables implementation bugs and typos were fixed. There
is no longer a default kernel program. Instead, you must set one yourself
either on the commandline or in the ferm firewall configuration file.

[021] - findimagedupes 0.1.3 (Default)
  by raindog2 (http://freshmeat.net/users/raindog2/)
Monday, February 12th 2001 08:21

findimagedupes is a command-line utility which performs a rough "visual
diff" on two images or a whole tree to detect if any look similar. It can
produce output suitable for driving GUI front-ends. It can also export a
GQView compatible collection file, so you can deal with the duplicates
visually. On common image types, findimagedupes seems to be around 98%
accurate.

Changes: This release includes bugfixes so findimagedupes now works on
Debian and Mandrake 7.2. New features include automatic rescanning if the
image database is empty or not present, various performance enhancements,
and a new mode that produces output suitable for driving GUI front-end

steady-state fluid flows. It uses the relaxation method, and can calculate
flows past symmetric objects. Steady-state means that it calculates the
flow at a given time, and that the physical parameters are constant in
time.

Changes: This release disables the printing of convergence to stdout and
adds it to the GUI instead.

The GNOME Installation Guide was written to help unfamiliar users install a
stable GNOME system that includes more than the default applications. It
teaches readers how to compile GNOME on their own instead of installing
precompiled packages. It also covers installation of extra GNOME programs,
both those hosted by the GNOME project and those which are not.

[031] - gnuboy 0.9.1 (development)
  by Laguna (http://freshmeat.net/users/laguna/)
Monday, February 12th 2001 01:19

gnuboy emulates the Color GameBoy handheld console in portable C, with
interfaces for X11, Linux svgalib, SDL, and DOS, with other ports planned
in the future. Compatibility with ROMs tested is around 99 percent, and all
major hardware features except SGB extensions are supported. With the
optional optimized i386 assembly code, gnuboy can run at the full 60 fps
even on Pentium/75 and below. No special libraries are required to compile,
and gnuboy is known to build on many *nix variants.

Changes: Experimental sound support. At present, only OSS sound output is
supported (no sound on DOS yet) and only three of the four sound channels
are emulated. However, the output quality is already fairly good. Most
games and demos tested, including several that use digital voice tricks,
sound great. Users should be aware that until sound support is perfected,
rom compatibility may be reduced slightly. Also, use of savestates may
result in (usually brief) bogus sound output due to sound state not being
saved.

[032] - GOB 1.0.6 (Default)
  by _vicious_ (http://freshmeat.net/users/vicious/)
Monday, February 12th 2001 01:44

GTK Object Builder (GOB) is a simple preprocessor for easily creating GTK
objects. It reads a class description file with inline C code and produces
.c and .h object files for you. It allows you to easily use all of the
features of the GTK object system and avoids typos by reducing the amount
of code needed. In general, the amount of code is about the same as for OO
languages such as Java or C++, but you still have to only use C and you get
all the power of the GTK object system.

Changes: Better functionality with the newer gccs, and typesafe signal
connection macros.

  by Wimpi (http://freshmeat.net/users/wimpi/)
Monday, February 12th 2001 06:24

jwma is a Web mail implementation based on the JSP Model 2 architecture. It
builds on standard Java APIs (Java Mail API, Java Server Pages, and Java
Servlet API) and relies on some available open source technologies (Xerces,
Castor, Jakarta-ORO). jwma is designed and implemented for use with an IMAP
server. It allows complete control over the store (creating, deleting, and
moving folders, mailboxes, and messages). It supports MIME messages,
supports text/plain message processing (e.g. making plaintext URLs
"clickable"), and supports automatic sent & read mail archiving. It
features a trash mailbox, includes a small addressbook, allows simple
configuration of its features, and can be used in parallel with other mail
clients (like Pine or Eudora).

Changes: This release includes removal of a lot of hardcoded text, enhanced
error handling and reporting, a fix for a problem with the auto-sign
feature, a fix for changing addresses on reply, a fix for a null pointer
exception when trying to compose a message, enhanced sendmail controller

[044] - KDEStudio Gold RC1 (Default)
  by Max Judin (http://freshmeat.net/users/judinmax/)
Monday, February 12th 2001 16:42

This is an IDE for the development of C++ KDE applications. It includes
code completion, dynamic syntax highlighting, and popup function parameter
lookup. Debugging is simplified by tight integration with kdbg, and
comprehensive documentation is provided. KDE Studio supports complex
projects composed of multiple executables and static or shared libraries
all in one workspace, and includes support for multiple targets from a
single project. Classes can be explored using a tree view, which is updated
on the fly as you code. Bookmarks can be placed in your code to speed up
navigation. KDE Studio has integrated support for Qt Designer and KBabel.

Changes: KDE Studio Gold now supports development of non-KDE applications,
with ready-made templates for console, X11, and Qt applications.
User-managed project types are also available. Flexible compiler
configuration options are now featured. Subprojects or the whole workspace
can be marked as user-managed, which prevents autoconf/automake from being
used. KDE Studio Gold now has a dockwidget that contains a konsole KPart.

[048] - ledmail 0.3-3 (Default)
  by Michael McTernan (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelmcternan/)
Monday, February 12th 2001 01:25

Ledmail is a small mail checking utility that utilises the keyboard LEDs
(caps, num, and scroll lock) to indicate when new mail has arrived. The
LEDs are made to flash in an answerphone-like manner to indicate the number
of new messages that are present in given mail servers. Each LED can be
given a separate list of mail servers to poll, and the total number of new
messages on those servers will determine how many times the LED will flash.
Errors in checking mail servers cause the LEDs to flash in an inverted
state, or to stay on. Ledmail can check both POP3 and IMAP4 mail servers.

Changes: Many small bugfixes, wrapping read() with select() so that reads
cannot block forever stalling the application, modularised code, and mail
checking routines dynamically load modules. The format of ledmail.conf was
changed, and the man pages were updated to detail all this. There is also
an all as new option for some accounts, where the total count of all
messages can be used as the mail count.

[062] - NISCA 1.1 (Default)
  by Brett Baugh (http://freshmeat.net/users/Phee/)
Monday, February 12th 2001 23:03

NISCA (Network Interface Statistics Collection Agent) is a more flexible
PHP4-based MRTG replacement. It supports both SNMP and reading localhost's
/proc/net/dev device file directly for statistics gathering. It uses MySQL
to store collected data in, and stores statistics for bytes transferred,
packets transferred, transfer errors, and dropped packets separated into a
per interace incoming and outgoing set. An SNMP setup utility is provided
to generate a list of all the known interfaces, which eases setting up. It
generates both graphs and a textual report table using the data from any
timeframe contained in the database. The entire package runs using PHP4; it
uses the CGI binary version of PHP for stats collection (running in the
backround as a daemon) and either the CGI or Apache module versions to
generate the GUI form and reports. It can also import your existing MRTG
logfiles.

Changes: An upgrade to the report generator to allow for viewing reports on
more than one host/if at once, a new option to show only text reports,
graphs, or both, and some bugfixes in the SNMP scripts.

nPULSE is a Web-based network monitoring package for Unix-like operating
systems. It can quickly monitor up to thousands of sites/devices at a time
on multiple ports. nPULSE is written in Perl and comes with its own (SSL
optional) Web server for extra security.

Changes: A new Port Sweep (port status search) is now available from the
'Status' page. Enter a port number and nPulse will search a network of
hosts for open/closed port status. A new ability to hide selected 'custom
commands' from users was also added (the admin user can see/execute all of

[064] - Pan 0.9.3 (Default)
  by Charles Kerr (http://freshmeat.net/users/charleskerr/)
Monday, February 12th 2001 12:16

Pan is a multithreaded Usenet newsreader for GTK and GNOME, loosely modeled
after the programs Agent and Gravity. It features online and offline
reading, automatic article threading, easy decoding of binaries, a rules
tool for user-configurable actions, and a task manager for controlling
concurrent article reading, group downloads, and attachment decoding. It
works with servers on standard and non-standard NNTP ports and is
configurable for NNTP authorization. It also has twenty-three language
translations.

Changes: This version should be faster and more reliable than previous
versions, and also adds inline display of HTML and images, a customizable
pane layout, a 100% score on the Good Newskeeping Seal of Approval,
grokking of moderated newsgroups, mbox-style folders, better MIME parsing,
and a better status display This is the first version of Pan since its
cancellation three months ago by Napster at the RIAA's request. Pan's
authors have left Napster for greener pastures and are able to resume work
on Pan thanks to its GPL license.

Monday, February 12th 2001 15:51

QuakeForge is a 3D graphics game engine based on id Software's legendary
Quake and QuakeWorld game engine. Its purpose is to improve the state of
the game by improving the engine and making it accessible to the largest
number of players it can.

Changes: Fixes for X11 DGA and VidMode problems, a fix for the setrom
command so it actually makes a pre-existing Cvar read-only, a fix for an
Alt+Tab problem on NVIDIA cards in Win32, fixes for several cross-platform
compile problems, a fix for a subtle client entity bug, a fix for mangling
map names in maplist, and a fix for Doubled "Game Paused" messages. X11
clients will not attempt to go fullscreen of the desired mode is not
available. New Cvars (cl_writecfg, fs_usercfg, and cl_demospeed), a server
default heap of 8MB instead of 16 (use -mem 12 if more is needed),
reduction of the client memory footprint by approximately 8MB by removing
data that should never have been in the client, and linking of
MOVETYPE_NONE into the world after their think function has been called.
Software clients will now render the view model when the fov Cvar has a
value greater than 90 (use r_drawviewmodel 0 to disable), X11 clients have
keyboard repeat when expecting typed input, and various particle system
