[001] - album 1.14 (Default)
  by DaveSource (http://freshmeat.net/users/daveola/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 04:39

album is a HTML/XHTML photo album generator which recursively descends
directories. It automatically crops your thumbnails so that they are all
the same shape. See the example albums for a good demonstration.

Changes: This release includes a -known_images option.

[002] - APC Alternative PHP Cache 1.0.8 (Default)
  by George Schlossnagle (http://freshmeat.net/users/gschlossnagle/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 20:35

APC was conceived of to provide a way of boosting the performance of PHP on
heavily loaded sites by providing a way for scripts to be cached in a
compiled state, so that the overhead of parsing and compiling can be almost
completely eliminated. There are commercial products which provide this
functionality, but they are neither open-source nor free. Our goal was to
level the playing field by providing an implementation that allows greater
flexibility and is universally accessible.

Changes: So-called encoder (or compile) functionality, multiple filter
regex support, and multiple minor bugfixes.

[003] - Arsdigita Content Management System 4.1.1 (Default)
  by David Lutterkort (http://freshmeat.net/users/lutter/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 16:11

Arsdigita CMS is a powerful content management system. It has a task list
for production staff to track their assignments and the status of their
current work items; a site map browser to view and organize pages and
content items and determine access control to branches of the site; a
standard interface for creating, editing, approving, and deploying content
items; a template manager for creating, editing, and organizing
presentation templates and related assets; a metadata manager for viewing
and defining content types and associations; a category browser for
managing a hierarchy of subject headings that may be applied to content
items; and administrative and management tools for creating and editing
user attributes and tracking global workflow statistics.

Changes: Many bugfixes and documentation updates.

[004] - ASPSeek 1.0.2 (Default)
  by Kir Kolyshkin (http://freshmeat.net/users/k001/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 08:49

ASPSeek is an Internet search engine, written in C++ using the STL library.
It consists of an indexing robot, a search daemon, and a CGI search
frontend. It can index as many as a few million URLs and search for words
and phrases, use wildcards, and do a Boolean search. Search results can be
limited to time period given, site or Web space (set of sites) and sorted
by relevance (PageRanks are used) or date. ASPSeek is optimized for
multiple sites (threaded index, async DNS lookups, grouping results by
site, Web spaces), but can be used for searching one site as well. Other
features include stopwords and ispell support, a charset and language
guesser, HTML templates for search results, excerpts, and query words
highlighting.

Changes: This release fixes a searchd coredump after telnetting to the
searchd port, aseek-users subscribe instructions, navleft in default
template, problems with EscapeURL not properly escaping queries, a
DebugLevel bug, and socklen_t is now fixed if it is not defined. Several
other small improvements including more charset, a Turkish stopword file,
and the ability to run a search query on other engines are also included.

[005] - AutoConvert 0.3.9 (Default)
  by Yu Guanghui (http://freshmeat.net/users/ygh/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 14:00

AutoConvert is an intelligent Chinese Encoding converter. It uses built-in
functions to judge the type of the input file's Chinese Encoding (such as
GB/Big5/HZ), then converts the input file to any type of Chinese Encoding
you want. You can use autoconvert to automatically convert incoming e-mail
messages. It can also optionally handle the UNI/UTF7/UTF8 encoding.

Changes: A fix for a Big5 encoding to Unicode conversion bug.

[009] - Courier-IMAP 1.3.3 (Default)
  by Sam Varshavchik (http://freshmeat.net/users/mrsam/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 20:45

Courier-IMAP is a lightweight server that provides IMAP access to maildir
mailboxes. It supports folders, custom authentication modules, and virtual
mailboxes. A compatible POP3 server is also provided. The source code is
based on the IMAP module in the Courier Mail Server, but this build is
independently repackaged to work with any other MTA that delivers to
maildir format mailboxes.

Changes: Updates for version 0.74 of the Linux-PAM library, and for some
versions of gmake.

[010] - devfsd 1.3.11 (Default)
  by Frédéric L. W. Meunier (http://freshmeat.net/users/fredlwm/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 08:34

The devfsd program is a daemon, run by the system boot, which can provide
for intelligent management of device entries in the Device Filesystem
(devfs). It is desirable to start the daemon at the beginning of the boot
scripts, in particular before filesystem checks.

Changes: This release includes some workarounds for glibc 2.2, and handles
cases where fsd [0:2] are closed already.

[011] - doxygen 1.2.5 (Default)
  by Dimitri van Heesch (http://freshmeat.net/users/dvh/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 16:23

Doxygen is a cross-platform, JavaDoc-like documentation system for C++,
Java, C, and IDL. Doxygen can be used to generate an on-line class browser
(in HTML) and/or an off-line reference manual (in LaTeX or RTF) from a set
of source files. Doxygen can also be configured to extract the
code-structure from undocumented source files. This can be very useful to
quickly find your way in large source distributions.

Changes: Initial Java support, and improved support for C. XML support is
moved to a separate frontend (and can currently only be built from
sources), and a few bugfixes were made.

[012] - drsync 0.3 (Default)
  by dLux (Balázs Szabó) (http://freshmeat.net/users/dlux/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 13:56

drsync is a Perl wrapper for rsync which keeps track of the filelist
between synchronizations. If you delete a file in one place, it will delete
it in the other place; if you add a file, it copies to the other place. It
is ideal for notebook users who want to keep data in two (or more)
different places. It is also good for the Linux PDAs (Agenda, iPAQ, Yopi,
etc.), to keep data synchronized with the desktop. The requirements are
designed to be minimum.

Changes: Verbose operation fixes, support for the --progress option of
rsync, and rsync error handling.

[013] - Dusk Graphical MUD Engine 2.2 (Default)
  by Tom Weingarten (http://freshmeat.net/users/captaint/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 23:31

Dusk is a graphical RPG engine that welcomes those wishing to contribute or
start their own worlds. A server pack with sample files is available, as
well as a directory of other worlds.

Changes: Removal of map cacheing due to excessive ram requirements, a
variable view range, a fix for a multiply merchant bug, eat/drink commands,
a fix for a sleep-while-following bug, mobs give items, not gp, and new
nochannel/allowchannel features.

  by Martin Foster (http://freshmeat.net/users/mfoster/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 05:48

Ethereal Realms is a concept web-based chat system based loosely on WBS and
IFC which are both now defunct. Utilizing Perl (Apache::PerlRun) and MySQL,
this system emulates what WBS had with certain improvements and refinements
made over the course of its development.

Changes: This release includes enhancements to database handling, and the
allowance for use of single quotes in names and the internal messaging
system.

[017] - Freenet 0.3.7 (Default)
  by Ian Clarke (http://freshmeat.net/users/sanity/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 03:39

Freenet is a peer-to-peer network designed to allow the distribution of
information over the Internet in an efficient manner, without fear of
censorship. It is completely decentralized (there is no person or computer
essential to its operation), meaning that Freenet cannot be attacked like
centralized peer-to-peer systems such as Napster. Freenet also employs
intelligent routing and caching to learn to route requests more
efficiently, automatically mirror popular data, make network flooding
almost impossible, and move data to where it is in greatest demand.

Changes: This release includes support for "date based directs" to allow
for more elegant regular updating of content within Freenet, support for
"MSKs" to improve the performance of large Web sites within Freenet,
optional filtering of Web sites to prevent misuse of your Web browser to
compromise your anonymity, and some minor bugfixes.

[018] - gbiff 2.0 (Default)
  by Nicolas Rougier (http://freshmeat.net/users/nicolasrougier/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 03:30

gbiff is a small xpbiff replacement. It checks for a mailfile and can
display sender, subject and date when a new mail has arrived. Headers can
be sorted by clicking on '#', 'From', 'Subject' or 'Date' field. It
interprets ISO-8859-1 encoding.

Changes: gbiff is now a full GNOME applet, is fully configurable via the
command-line or graphical interface, and can interpret any ISO-8859
encoding.

[019] - GEOTRANS Library 1 (Stable)
  by Eric G. Miller (http://freshmeat.net/users/egm2/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 05:29

The GEOTRANS library is a repackaging of the National Imagery and Mapping
Agency's (NIMA) DT&CC and Engine libraries. The two form the basis for
NIMA's GEOTRANS2 Coordinate Conversion Calculator application. This
packaging uses GNU tools to build static and shared libraries from the
original sources, and is similar to what is available with the PROJ4
library.

tarball, and renaming from libgeotrans-2.0.3 to avoid any possible
confusion with NIMA's GEOTRANS2 application.

[021] - getmail 2.0.13 (Release)
  by Charles Cazabon (http://freshmeat.net/users/twoflower/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 13:38

getmail is intended as a simple replacement for fetchmail. It retrieves
mail (either all messages, or only unread messages) from one or more POP3
servers for one or more email accounts, and reliably delivers into a
qmail-style Maildir (or mbox file) specified on a per-account basis.
getmail also has support for domain (multidrop) mailboxes.

GIMP Dynamic Text is a GIMP plug-in that works like the GIMP's built-in
text tool but allows you to draw multi-line text which can be re-edited
after it has been drawn.

Changes: This release includes better placement for text lines by using -1
for the border value when using gimp_text_fontname, layer names are no
longer messed up if you change the name then re-edit the text, support for
compiling with GTK_DISABLE_COMPAT_H defined, and marges from 1.5.2 from

interfaces for X11, Linux svgalib, and DOS, with other ports planned in the
future. Compatibility with roms tested is around 99 percent, and all major
hardware features except sound and SGB extensions are supported. With the
optimized i386 assembly code (optional, of course), gnuboy can run at the
full 60 fps even on Pentium/75 and below. No special libraries are
required to compile, and gnuboy is known to build on many *nix variants.

Changes: Addition of saved states to allow you to save and load anywhere
with any ROM, fixes for numerous bugs (a few moderately significant, others
just for completeness' sake), further optimizations to the i386 assembly
CPU core, and more technical documentation.

[029] - gtex-letter 0.13 (Development)
  by dune73 (http://freshmeat.net/users/dune73/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 13:58

gtex-letter attempts to deliver an easy alternative interface to
LaTeX-letter. It is heavily configurable and supports multiple letter
headers, and default letter openings configurable in the rc-file. Users can
choose from three different complexities of the graphical interface. Novice
being easy to understand, expert being straight forward. There is a
non-interactive mode, that makes production of standard-letters very fast.
gtex-letter is implemented in python and based on gnome.

Changes: Piping of text/address into gtex-letter, a no-splash-screen
option, multiple addressbook-files, a sortable addressbook (ascending and
descending by clicking on the column title), and ability to select an
address by double-clicking.

[030] - Helpdesk::Mail 0.3 (Default)
  by lukas (http://freshmeat.net/users/lertl/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 16:10

The Helpdesk::Mail System is a Perl application intended to assist
Helpdesks and Support Centers in organizing their email communication with
their customers. Especially if there is one email address and several
people who reply to those emails and answer questions, Helpdesk::Mail can
come in handy. It is not just another webmail application; one can assign a
"user-id" for an e-mail (e.g. an account number) to track how often one
user asks for help. It also has an additional "Knowledge Base" feature: if
your customers ask the same questions over and over again, you can save the
answer in the Knowledge Base and prefill a reply with this answer by simply
typing in some keywords and click on a link. There's also a public
interface to the Knowledge Base.

Changes: Mail sending method can be set in Config.pm either to a local MTA
like sendmail, qmail, postfix, etc., or to a remote mail server.

[031] - HyperQbs 2.0 beta 1.0 week 06 (2001) (weekly development updates)
  by pulrich (http://freshmeat.net/users/pulrich/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 15:55

HyperQbs is Java2EE and XML-based technology enabling components with a
dynamic face. It is designed as a successor of Servlets and JSP, and allows
complete separation of the work between programmers and Web designers. It
enables team work, prototyping, and incremental life-cycle development of
Internet applications with reusable plugin components. Components
encapsulate EJBs, JavaBeans, etc. It also implements the M-V-C paradigm and
functions as server-side middleware.

Changes: Updated qbdescription.xml on the basis of qb.xml (new element
section) and new DocBook-like elements for entering structured text
(bridgehead, para, programlisting, literallayout, variablelist,
itemizedlist, orderedlist, important, note, tip, warning), a new subtag of
reaction (for-outcome), a new subtag of subqbprocessing (for-reaction), and
note variables of Qbs can be request-only persistent (see the method

[035] - jahtml 2.00 (Default)
  by Jerome ALET (http://freshmeat.net/users/jalet/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 08:15

jahtml allows people to generate smart indented HTML documents as well as
output HTML code from CGI scripts. It defines 2 Python classes,
Html_document and CGI_document. Html_document provides many methods plus
some useful ones like a default document skeleton and others like template
files with variables substitution ala Whiz. CGI_document provides all of
the Html_document's methods plus some interesting CGI-centric ones, like
the ability to output both to a file or/and a debug file, to log messages
to the HTTP server's error log file, to read environment variables.

Changes: This is the last release of the jahtml module, as it has now been

Tuesday, February 6th 2001 04:36

jbofihe (or more correctly jbofi'e) is a parser for checking the
grammatical correctness of Lojban text. It also provides approximate
translations of Lojban into English. (Lojban is a constructed human
language with the interesting property that its grammar can be cast into a
form that Bison can parse.) The package includes cmafi'e (a smaller version
without grammar checking), and a program to aid lujvo (compound word)
construction.

Changes: This release includes an improved word categorisation/splitting
algorithm, a seperate utility to show the type of a word interactively, a
port to MSDOS (using DJGPP), new options to analyse elidable terminators
(eg. showing which ones could be safely omitted), improved back-tracing

[048] - Make CD-ROM Recovery 0.4.6 (Default)
  by Gratien D'haese (http://freshmeat.net/users/gdha/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 08:44

mkCDrec (Make CDROM Recovery) makes a bootable (El Torito) disaster
recovery image, including backups of the Linux system to one or more
CD-ROM(s) (multi-volume sets). Otherwise, the backups can be stored on
another disk, NFS disk, or (remote) tape. After a disk crash or system
intrusion the system can be booted from the CD-ROM and one can restore the
complete system as it was. It also features disk cloning, which allows one
to restore a disk to another disk (the destination disk does not have to be
of the same size, as it calculates the partition layout itself). Currently,
ext2 and reiserfs filesystems are supported.

Changes: MkCDrec can now make multi-volume CD-ROMs containing backups (only
the first CD-ROM is bootable). This release also includes the ability to
burn images immediately or make multiple ISO9660 images on hard disk (if
you wish to copy them to another system), has been redesigned.to be
modular, and fixes numerous bugs. It is also now possible to backup and

MuSE aims to be an application for the mixing, encoding, and streaming of
sound. It is a server engine that can simultaneously mix up to 6 separate
mp3 audio files from the hard drive, where each channel of audio can be
dynamically adjusted for speed and volume, plus a soundcard line-in

[063] - PHPwebmail 2.1 (Default)
  by Bernard M. Piller (http://freshmeat.net/users/hoss33/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 04:28

PHPwebmail is a Web-based IMAP and SMTP mail client. Often it is not
possible to make outside mail connections from networks behind strict
firewalls, or to configure a regular mail client (for example in an
Internet cafe). With PHPwebmail a mail client only needs a WWW connection
to the mailserver. Specifically it only needs a connection to the webserver
hosting PHPwebmail. Most of the times the Web and mail server will be the
same machine but PHPwebmail can connect to other mailservers as well as
long as an IMAP connection between these two machines is allowed.

Changes: PHPwebmail now uses MySQL to keep sent messages, as well as an
e-mail address book. Some minor bugfixes are also included, mostly
relating to IMAP folders.

PHPWidgets! is a tool for building dynamic webpages out of HTML and PHP
code snippets. It provides a means of building pages using reusable
elements. It can be set up to allow users to customise their accounts.

Changes: This release fixes a number of bugs including an 'Original

[065] - Pliant 56 (Default)
by Patrice Ossona de Mendez (http://freshmeat.net/users/pom/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 13:42

Pliant is a new generation language, which is modular, reflexive, and
dynamically-compiled. It looks like a merging of Prolog, typed Lisp, and C.
The programming environment includes HTTP, FTP, SMTP, POP3, DNS servers and
clients, a database engine, a multi-forum administration tool, etc. It runs
on Linux, POSIX, and Windows platforms.

Changes: Trying to remove a key in an empty dictionary would previously
cause a crash. This release adds better display of crazy mails in the Web
mail, a much better FullPliant install system, and many small bugfixes in
the Pliant forum application.

[066] - PLWM 2.2 (Default)
  by Peter Liljenberg (http://freshmeat.net/users/petli/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 08:29

PLWM (The Pointless Window Manager) is a highly modularised window manager
written in Python. It has no configuration files; instead, you combine
Python classes to make the perfect window manager for yourself. This is not
a window manager for non-programmers. The feature list includes
point-to-focus and sloppy-focus, outline move, resizing, deiconifying,
views (extremely powerful workspaces), and multihead support. PLWM is
controlled completely from the keyboard.

Changes: This release includes completed documentation, a new inspect
module allowing the internals of a running PLWM to be studied or modfied by
an external client, event loop improvement, a fix for a timer event bug,
cleaner mode window code, and key grabbing support.

[068] - ProFTPD 1.2.0rc3 (Default)
  by Korenwolf (http://freshmeat.net/users/flyhmstr/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 14:09

ProFTPD is a proven, high-performance, scalable FTP server written from
scratch, with a focus toward simplicity, security, and ease of
configuration. Naturally, ProFTPD powers some of the largest sites on the
Internet. It features a very Apache-like configuration syntax, modules, and
a highly customizable server infrastructure, including support for multiple
'virtual' FTP servers, anonymous FTP, and permission-based directory
visibility.

Changes: Fixes for PASV support, security fixes for problems reported on
Bugtraq, several new directives, and numerous other fixes. SQL support has
been removed until a new maintainer for the modules can be found and the
security-related bugs are fixed.

[069] - PyMD5Pwd 0.2 (Development)
  by Shawn Farkas (http://freshmeat.net/users/sfarkas/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 14:05

PyMD5Pwd provides the md5pwd module for Python 1.5. It allows Python
scripts to access passwords that are not stored with the crypt() algorithm,
but rather with a MD5 hashing algorithm. PyMD5Pwd is not limited to simply
accessing /etc/shadow or /etc/passwd; it can be used to create a seperate,
secure, password database for your application.

Changes: The Python binary module created by compiling the source or
installing the RPM or DEB package has been renamed md5pwd.so instead of
pymd5pwd.so, which increases the number of Python distributions that
PyMD5Pwd will work with out of the box.

[072] - SCAIN v3.0-test2 (v3.0)
  by Patrizio Bruno (http://freshmeat.net/users/rustino/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 03:42

SCAIN (Simple Crypto Algorithm Ideated by a Novice) is a simple
cryptographic algorithm that generates different output with the same input
and the same password. It uses pass phrases and keys of arbitrary lengths;
the idea is to hide the key in the cipher based on the password.

Changes: This release of the algorithm features a new dynamic key
encryption, which increases the number of possibilities for differences in
blocks of ciphertext, even if you don't use bit trasposition and the
plaintext is rather similar.

Tuesday, February 6th 2001 20:38

Smurf is a GTK-based sound font editor. Sound font files are a collection
of audio samples and other data that describe instruments for the purpose
of composing music. Sound fonts do not describe the music itself, but
rather the sounds of the instruments. These instruments can be composed of
any digitally recordable or generated sound. This format provides a

[079] - the Anomy mail sanitizer 1.35 (Default)
  by Juggler (http://freshmeat.net/users/juggler/)
Tuesday, February 6th 2001 08:24

The Anomy mail sanitizer is a filter designed to block email-based security
risks, such as trojans and viruses. It can scan an arbitrarily complex
RFC822 or MIME message and remove or rename attachments, truncate unusually
long MIME header fields and sanitize HTML by disabling Javascript, etc. It
uses a single-pass pure Perl MIME parser, which can make it both more
efficient and more precise than other similar programs. The sanitizer has
built-in support for third-party virus scanners.
