The Linux Kernel and Linux Distributions
by Jeff Garzik (mailto:jgarzik@mandrakesoft.com)
Section: Editorials
Saturday, February 3rd 2001 16:54

Whenever a new kernel comes out, there's a lag time between when it's
adopted by those who don't mind compiling it themselves and by those who
are waiting to get it bundled in an already-tested package from the
maintainers of their distributions. In part, the delay is just the result
of the difference between those who live on the edge and those who stick
with the tried-and-true, but could it be shortened by reducing the work
that the distributions have to do to adopt the new kernel? In today's
editorial, Jeff Garzik of MandrakeSoft describes the process of fitting the
two together. Update: Developers from Conectiva have written to share
their thoughts on the subject.

[001] - 123mp3 1.1 (default)
  by Jimbob (http://freshmeat.net/users/jimbob/)
Saturday, February 3rd 2001 14:09

123mp3 is a frontend to BladeEnc and CDDA2WAV that produces MP3s from
selected tracks on a CD in one automated process.

Changes: Users now have control over where the mp3 files will be written
(rather than having to simply have them written to the current working
directory).

[002] - Alzabo 0.30 (default)
  by Dave Rolsky (http://freshmeat.net/users/urthman/)
Saturday, February 3rd 2001 23:53

Alzabo is a two-fold program. Its first function is as a data modelling
tool. Through either a schema creation interface or a custom Perl program,
it allows a programmer to create a set of schema, table, column, etc.
objects that represent a data model. Alzabo is also capable of reverse
engineering an existing data model. Its second function is as a RDBMS to
object mapping system. Once you have created a schema, you can use Alzabo
classes to access its data. These classes offer a low level interface to
common operations such as SQL SELECT, INSERT, DELETE, and UPDATE commands.

Changes: Numerous enhancements including multiple column foreign keys,
reworking of the caching system, and Alzabo::MethodMaker enhancements, plus
the usual round of bugfixing and documentation improvements.

[004] - Asp 1.8 (default)
  by Stenio Brunetta (http://freshmeat.net/users/stenio/)
Saturday, February 3rd 2001 08:35

Asp finds the IP address of an host connected to Internet knowing the host
name and its possible IP addresses. The use of Asp is suggested when the
nameserver of the looked-for host does not provide information about its
address: this is a common case for hosts connected via PPP or SLIP with
dynamic IP allocation. With Asp you can let others find your host when it
is online independently from your ISP by running a server on your host.

Changes: This release includes an option to query the address of a
specified interface.

  by Andrew Medico (http://freshmeat.net/users/amedico/)
Saturday, February 3rd 2001 09:10

dailystrips is a utility to download your favorite online comic strips each
day. What sets it apart from the rest is its "local" mode of operation,
which automatically downloads strips for you.

Changes: This release includes the ability to detect if dailystrips has
downloaded the same image the day before for a daily strip, and gives an
error instead of showing an old strip.

Saturday, February 3rd 2001 15:08

diet libc contains just the bare minimum, i.e. the system call wrappers
(including socket stuff) and malloc and friends, to create small,
statically-linked binaries under x86, Sparc, PPC, ARM, MIPS, and
Alpha-Linux.

Changes: This release fixes two major Sparc bugs, adds mktime, asctime,
ctime, localtime, and gmtime, adds several prototypes, removes glibc
compatibility crud, adds _FILE_OFFSET_BITS for large file support, fixes
fread, and makes it possible to link gzip, bzip2, and lzop against it.

[013] - dsproxy 0.2.16 (default)
  by Arjuna (http://freshmeat.net/users/arjuna/)
Saturday, February 3rd 2001 07:04

dsproxy emulates an OSS device that "virtualizes" itself so each UID that
opens /dev/dsp gets its own private sound device. At this point,
simultaneous reading of /dev/dsp by another process "samples" the data out
of dsproxy. The tagged audio data and ioctls stream may be saved to disk
locally as the example program does, retargeted over a network, pushed into
an effects generator (3-D sound), etc. The virtualization feature is a
stepping stone to adding sound to VNC on a per-desktop basis with each user
appearing to have total control over /dev/dsp. Most OSS ioctls are
implemented, so applications such as xmame and rvplayer7 may be retargeted
through dsproxy.

[036] - JavaPad 1.2.0 (default)
  by Erlend Aakre (http://freshmeat.net/users/klogd/)

JavaPad is a Java implementation of the "one time pad" cryptography
algorithm. It works well as a standalone application in textmode or in
graphical mode. It can generate keys and encrypt files. JavaPad can be
easily used as a library by other applications as streams, and such use
requires only a few lines of code. This is a good way to incorporate strong
symmetric encryption in your application.

[037] - Jenesis Language Syntax API 0.2.1 (default)
  by ickhabod (http://freshmeat.net/users/ickhabod/)
Saturday, February 3rd 2001 14:32

Jenesis is a tool for dynamic generation of Java source code files. The API
is an abstraction of the Java language syntax. It is intended for use by
developers writing applications which dynamically emit source code or
require on-the-fly classfile generation. Automatic sourcefile compilation
in conjunction with Javac or Jikes is supported. Documentation includes the
Javadocs, the source code itself, and an LDP-style User Guide.

[047] - minit 0.4 (default)
  by Felix von Leitner (http://freshmeat.net/users/fefe/)
Saturday, February 3rd 2001 15:12

minit is an attempt to cross-breed DJ Bernstein's daemontools and init
while adding dependencies and maintaining minimal code base. Currently,
dependencies work fine, and it is possible to start and stop services on
the fly. minit does not depend on a mounted /proc file system and it does
not write to any part of the file system, not even to start and stop
services. It does not use System V IPC, either. No one has actually
implemented a full-blown init script hierarchy with it, but it should be
possible.

[060] - Qt 2.2.4 (default)
  by Stephan Binner (http://freshmeat.net/users/stbinner/)
Saturday, February 3rd 2001 07:11

Qt is a toolkit for software developers. Qt simplifies the task of writing
and maintaining GUI (graphical user interface) applications. Qt is written
in C++ and is fully object-oriented. Qt is a multi-platform toolkit. When
you implement a program with Qt, you can run it on the X Window System
(Unix/X11) or Microsoft Windows NT/95/98/2000. Simply compile the source
code for the platform you want.

Changes: Printing quality and postscript output on X11 has been improved,
the page and text formatting now handles different Windows versions
correctly, image loading of PNG and GIF files is much more robust against
broken files, and popup menus do not grab the X11 keyboard anymore, but
rely on and enforce the application to have focus. This works around an X11

Remote Tea is a pure Java implementation of Sun's ONC/RPC protocol.
Complete client and server functionality is available, as is client access
to the portmapper. The package contains an rpcgen-like precompiler for
converting .x files into Java classes.

Changes: This release fixes an authentication deserializing bug for
AUTH_NONE on the server side, a problem with jrpcgen not emitting constant
definitions in proper order if some constant definitions depend on other
constants, and a NullPointerException in both TCP and UDP RDC clients. This
release also includes improved JDK 1.1 backwards compatibility and HTTP
tunneling support.

RFC Util allows you to specify the number of an RFC, or a search string,
and it returns all related RFCs. It features command line switches to spawn
lynx or w3m to view the RFC, dump to file for offline viewing, or mail to
an address. It also allows local and remote lookups of port, service, or
proto numbers.

Changes: This release now includes version numbers on download links so OS
ports don't break with upgrades, the -m option has additional error
handling, -p URLs are now updated from ftp to http links to handle buggy
w3m implementations.

[065] - SANTK 1.6 (default)
by University of Minnesota Fibre Channel Research Group
(http://freshmeat.net/users/umfc/)
Saturday, February 3rd 2001 10:02

SANTK (Storage Area Network Configuration Toolkit) is a toolkit written in
Java 1.3 to better facilitate SAN design and development. The major areas
of difficulty in SAN design lie in the architecture of the SANs themselves.
Scalability, network complexity, and netlist management become cumbersome
as the number of nodes in the network increases. In order to address these
problems, it is necessary to be able to dynamically design and record the
topology of a network. The purpose of the SANTK is to assist in resolving
these issues.

Changes: This release includes the new Scalability Display. This feature
graphically displays a SAN's potential growth (the number of devices that
can be added to the current architecture).

SharkBait is a set of two simple C routines main() to decode the input from
the RadioShack/Digital Convergence Cue:Cat: barcode scanner. The example
main routine just reads a line from stdin and dumps the barcode type and
information to stdout.

Changes: This release fixes a problem in the decode loop that caused "C"
characters to be mistaken for terminating nulls.

SysOrb is a client/server package that can monitor servers remotely (such
as Web servers), or monitor devices on servers (such as disks, memory,
load, etc.). It will alert the administrators via e-mail or pager if a
server is entering a critical condition, and has its own database backend,
allowing for massive collection of system statistics.

Changes: This release fixes a problematic bug with the NT port of SysOrb
which could cause a crash on certain occasions, as well as an error in the
log-file handling in NT.

[077] - sysstat 3.3.4 (default)
  by Sébastien Godard (http://freshmeat.net/users/godard/)
Saturday, February 3rd 2001 02:15

The sysstat package contains the sar, mpstat, and iostat commands for
Linux. The sar command collects and reports system activity information.
This information can also be saved in a system activity file for future
inspection. The iostat command reports CPU statistics and I/O statistics
for tty devices and disks. The statistics reported by sar concern I/O
transfer rates, paging activity, process-related activites, interrupts,
network activity, memory and swap space utilization, CPU utilization,
kernel activities, and TTY statistics, among others. Both UP and SMP
machines are fully supported.

Changes: This release fixes several bugs including duplicate counting of
disk I/O statistics when reading /proc/stat with 2.4 kernels. Iostat is no
longer able to save its data to a file, although now works with 2.4 kernels
and can handle the format of the /proc/stat file for both 2.2 and 2.4
kernels. Sar now reports statistics on allocated disk quota entries
instead of on used ones. The manual pages for sar and Iostat have also
been updated.

user-friendly interface than the default chooser. It allows the user to
type in a host name, then either query the host (to see if it is up and
accepting), or connect to the host. The majority of options are
configurable via the conf file (xdmchoose.conf). A small utility "xdmping"
comes with it, which allows a command-line probe of an XDM host's
willingness to manage a session.
