Yes, it is possible. My sister is using a similar combination on her
home office router. She has a 2 GB USB stick, which is used to store
temporary files via Samba. A Kyocera laser printer is connected to
the other USB port. There is also a OpenVPN running to connect to
our office and she sometimes uses his DECT to answer calls from our
main office (we use Asterisk in our Office). The router is a Asus
WL500g deluxe, but premium is even better. Some of my customers are
using Samba and 30-160 GB disks connected to the router.
One tipp, use either ext2 or ext3 kernel module, not both. You can
use vfat, too.

Take a look at p9100d package, it just bridges your USB port to
TCP/IP. You can configure the printer on windows or linux. Both
is working fine. Cups should work, too, but p9100d is simpler to
setup.
