Actually all that is required for a copyright is for the work to 
actually say - Copyright date name of person or company - also the 
(c) works in the US but it is not recognized in a lot of other 
contries.  The thing about the copyright is that it must be said or 
the thing is put into the public domain by default.  If anyone were 
to take your material and publish it as their own you might have a chance to fight 
them in court but without registering it you would probably be SOL.
Copyrighting is FREE but the work must say that it is copyrighted and 
by whom and the date released.
