The original post was about an MORE$ _driver_, however:

The ANSI driver does indeed interprete VTxyz Escape sequence, but:
a) it needs to know an utilize the screen with correct size (which is
not 100% easily detected),
b) each character has to pass the ANSI driver anyway (if passed onto
screen).

So you could en/disable MORE-mode via some ESC sequence and you are done.
