I think the answer is a little complicated:
* The Window Manager / Desktop Environment typically runs alongside other
client applications, not beneath them. It does get involved with
transactions between other apps and the server, but it is sort of just
another client.
* The Display Manager runs alongside the server, and is responsible for
starting and stopping servers among other things.
* A Word Processor and a Web Browser would typically be separate clients.
* Each client has its own toolkit and X libraries notionally under it.
* XDMCP isn't so much a library as a protocol for an auth service provided
by the server in cooperation with the Display Manager.
* The graphics and input drivers are typically split between low-level
functionality in the Linux Kernel and higher-level functionality in the X
Server.
