My Polaroid 1440x900 TV screen misbehaves similarly.

/etc/X11/xorg.conf works the same as it always has. The following works for mine:

# 50-device.conf
Section "Device"
	Identifier	"Default Device"
EndSection

# 50-monitor.conf
Section "Monitor"
	Identifier	"Default Monitor"
	Option "PreferredMode" "1440x900"
EndSection

# 50-screen.conf
Section "Screen"
	Identifier	"Default Screen"
	Device "Default Device"
	Monitor "Default Monitor"
EndSection

xorg.conf can be split up into 3 files named as per the comments and put into
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/.
