I was wondering if it is possible to do translucency and alpha transparency
(same thing?) between a window and its re-parented parent window via a
compositing window manager.

I have tried to use xcompmgr and compiz. xcompmgr seems to refuse to
composite render windows that don't have the root window as it's parent.
And compiz doesn't seem to work at all (i must be missing something)

But I ask, is this even possible? Is there an obvious solution that I am
missing?

Also, I have an SO question that relates to this issue, it also contains
example code that demonstrates my issue:
