There are alternatives to get the double function. One is to use input
methods, see, for example,
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26705
Another one is to use the RECORD and XTEST. In both cases, space would
normally switch the layout, but when pressed and immediately released
"compose" a space, or synthesise a key press event that creates a space,
respectively.
