Hi Martin,

Thanks for your reply. I dont know what more too add other than saying 
when I try installing Fedora Core 1 on these machines Anaconda displays 
a garbaged screen.

If I can get it to install in text mode then I will try what you suggest.

I will try it when I get back home in the week.

I'm not one of the "official Xorg developers".
However - maybe we can still successfully solve your issue, despite the
fact that I am a complete total newbie without any prior experience.

First, Xorg has its roots in pre 2004 XFree86.
So it should normally work at least as well with a given config, as an
older XFree86 (like in your case) did.
The CL-GD5446 is old, but had once been quite widespread in the mid
nineties.
I don't believe that the drivers are unsupported/untested now (not
sure though).

First, how did you try to configure X?
Maybe Fedora includes some configuration utility and maybe the mistake
already happens there.

Try the following and report the results (and also the Xorg log file) :

Xorg -verbose -logverbose -configure

Also, doesn't xorgcfg bring X up properly?
If that didn't work, did you already try xorgconfig (manual text mode
setup) with conservative Monitor sync settings and afterwards xinit?

Even if the device specific driver does not work, you then
should still be able to use VESA as interim solution, until the rest
