I think we've seen this proposal previously, but the solution was 
different.

Instead, you'd say you can handle a virtual MIME type, 
like "x-virtual/okular". And then each oKular plugin would install 
a .desktop file that would complement the meaning of "x-virtual/okular".

I don't remember the exact details. If you search the archives for Gimp 
and "gdk-pixbuf", you may find it.
