Well, I guess we others don't have your knowledge about posix respective to 
this topic.

Yuu could enlighten us and provide some example how the desired functionality 
would be implemented using posix functions.
Only conceptually not fully detailed, something like
reading a document:
- open
- read in select/poll loop
- close

Interesing would be for example:
- listing directory given an FTP URL
- stat'ing a file given an FTP URL
- getting the MIME type given an URL
