Re-thinking about this, I am not sure at all that this makes any sense!

Also --- even if the autohinter is enabled, what if the font has its
own native hinting,won't that override it...

How do you ask the system, "what kind of hinting are you using for a
particular font" ? If there's no way to ask that, i'm afraid we'll
never know for sure, because the configuration system is way too
intricate (at least 10 different config files !  Some specific to
suse, some not.).
