Talking about including new letters, Unicode 5.1 has just been
released (4th April 08), and among the additions, it has new
characters for Malayalam,
http://www.unicode.org/versions/Unicode5.1.0/#Malayalam_Chillu_Characters

An open-source font has the capacity to cover these new characters
much faster than proprietary fonts.
