Yes, but as I see it, it is unneeded complexity.

If it's for compression, well PNG and zip use the same algorithm 
(http://www.w3.org/TR/PNG-Compression.html). Sure PNG, allow some more 
compression because it reorders the bit following some sort of pyramid, but I 
am not sure it is worth the extracomplexity.
