You don't need to "detect" external modems as such. Just point ppp to
the right com port (set device to cuaa1) in your ppp.conf file.
That's why a lot of people advocate the usage of external modems over
internal ones. Just know that...

Do note that in case anyone was curious, this applies to external
ISDN "modems" as well. Just point ppp at the right serial port and
go. It may not the best solution (read the handbook for why) straight
away, but it works.
