VLC enables to chose the output module and the device :). Default is  
/dev/dsp, so I'll test /dev/dsp* [* = 0 to 8] later today, I have no time  
to do it right now.

There's one not serious issue. It does ignore the font size for Xfce4.  
Fonts are much to small for me.

$ su root -c "kldload snd_hdspe"
Password:
$ vlc
VLC media player 2.0.5 Twoflower (revision 2.0.5-0-g1661b7d)
[0x801c48198] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use  
'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
