Maybe you want to use -of mpeg option too. Otherwise the mpeg1 video is
put into avi container.

mencoder -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg1video -oac mp3lame \
-of mpeg -o $MPEG1_FILE $WMV_FILE
