I also had many problems with de0 driver wrt. to the media switching when
the cable was pulled out. I used the following kludge: I run the script,
which would check every 5 minutes if I can see the router, if not - I'd do
ifconfig de0 down/up to force it to check the media; if it's ok, the 
script would sleep the next 5 min.

I know it's ugly, but it works.
