Thank you for fixing this quickly!

As for not putting things in stable, ever, that is unfortunate.

I try to merge my changes back to the active stable branches when it makes
sense to do so.  Otherwise, end users won't get the benefit of the change until
years down the road.  Or, someone else has to see and understand my changes
well enough to merge them.
