Also, doing a "standard installation" (in 4.0--also known as "novice
installation" in 3.4 and below) will prompt you about configuring a window
manager during the course of the install.

If you chose 'custom install' it won't do this unless you explicitly "know
what you're doing" and Do The Right Thing(tm) at the right time.
