\d doesn't actually seem to be supported in GNU sed, either?
% echo "n9ne" | sed -e 's/\d/x/'
n9ne
% sed --version
sed (GNU sed) 4.8
It's just that they're not as strict as we now are about bogus escapes, so this
was a hidden bug.
