Cool! It's not perfect, but a good start. If you try playing with the \
reference-orientation on the fo:block-containers, you'll see what I mean... Then \
again, while tracking down this bug, I did accidentally stumble upon the fact that \
reference-orientation was being treated as an inheritable property. As a consequence, \
if you specify a reference-orientation of 90 on the outer block-container, the \
content in the inner block-containers will be rendered upside-down \
(reference-orientation="180").
I'll commit the fix to the trunk as soon as I get this last detail sorted out.

Well, don't know if you've been following fop-dev@, but there's an enhancement on the \
way which enables auto-discovery of the fonts available to your OS (thanks to Adrian \
Cumiskey). No idea if this will help you out much here, but it might...
