Yes, several people have reported that.  As far as I can see, it is caused by 
a bug in freeglut 2.4 which should be fixed in freeglut CVS.

Yes - use freeglut 2.2, the latest CVS freeglut, plain old glut or perhaps 
preferably, SDL.
