I read the FGAddon wiki and I will go with it being the preferred approach.
I admit I'm a bit confused still but I will ask help as soon as I get stuck!

Hi,

For different development scenarios focusing on the official FGAddon
craft repository, have a look at:

<a href="https://wiki.flightgear.org/FGAddon#Development_scenarios" \
rel="noreferrer noreferrer" \
target="_blank">https://wiki.flightgear.org/FGAddon#Development_scenarios
\
One method still to be documented is the manual merger of externally
developed craft. It's up to you if you develop directly in FGAddon
(that was the original intention of the repository, just as the
original fgdata gitorious repository was), or have an external
development location (cvs, svn, git, hg, file upload area with no
version control, private only on your computer, etc.) and merge
changes back into FGAddon, or set up your own 3rd party hangar [1].

Regards,

Edward
