I'm a bit worried about this, since I think you used some code in fgpanel which will \
not work inside the FlightGear scene. But we can check if this is really true.

Sorry, ‘cropping' is maybe mis-named here. I don't mean CPU-side cropping, I mean \
‘building geometry with correct UV coordinates so that the images appear \
correctly'. The old panel code does this using tex-translate which we can't do in \
modern OpenGL of course. How do you do solve it in the fgpanel code?
