In case you still want to clone, in my experience, the connection is
more reliable when cloning with

  git clone ssh://yourSFusername@git.code.sf.net/p/flightgear/fgdata

And once done, you can always change the protocol to https in the
repos's .git/config if you want. But it is true that cloning this repo
takes time, and every time you want to file a MR, you'll have to *push*
to your fork at SF an amount of data roughly equivalent to what FGData
received since you last updated your fork, which may take a while!
