There is some history here. When adding support for multiple aircraft paths, I didn't \
know about this option, having never used it. It was originally added (as the wiki \
page says) purely for UIUC aircraft. Hence it being hidden in September 2010, I \
guess. When I started adding aircraft package support, I made the underlying property \
(/sim/aircraft-dir) be used by all the FDMs, and also added the \
‘CurrentAircraftResourceProvider' based off this property, as the best way to find \
Aircraft resources.
Now, for the future, ideally —fg-aircraft, and —aircraft-dir will both become \
unnecessary options (for normal users), because aircraft will be specified via a \
fully-qualified package ID, e.g. org.flightgear.official.777 or \
net.somewebsite.james-hangar.ogel
In this system, /sim/aircraft-dir is set once the fully qualified ID has been \
resolved to a particular aircraft package on disk - this allows variations on \
aircraft to exist in different hangars, with no cross-talk or interference, \
hopefully.
For developing aircraft, obviously —fg-aircraft or —aircraft-dir are useful, so \
the question becomes how we document / expose these options so it's clear when they \
are appropriate or not.
