That'd make sense.  Unless you're going binary-only for the rest of your
setup, though, it still looks like something's amiss in your selfupdate
setup, since 10.4 has had libkpathsea4-1.5.6 since November 2007.

In any case, this isn't an unexpected development when _not_ enabling
the whole unstable tree, as noted in the FAQ:

Since texlive explicitly depends on a version of libkpathsea4 which
isn't in the stable tree, you'll need to make that available in some
manner as well; e.g. either by copying its package description into your
local tree so that it is visible, or by enabling unstable.
