Sorry, Francis. I was really dumb checking your file with 1.96 which I
am using and you have 1.95, there should not be any item.feat.present.

So, I have installed 1.95 from FC4 rpm festival-1.95-3, gone
to /usr/share/festival/ and changed festival.scm as you and everything
works for me. Can it be locale problem? Have you tried to export LANG=C
and LC_ALL=C and then run festival under C locale?

That should not be so. Let's find why it's happening. Btw, if you
installed fresh festival, does just (tts_text "Hello world" nil) work
for you? It looks like " is somehow ignored. What will be if you'll just
type (string-length "Hello world")?
