A follow-on to my last message: also, why did my usage of text2wave result
in rendered utterances with low volume in the first place?

Subject: text2wave - why do certain things work and others not?

Last week, I posted a question about how to modify the loudness/intensity of
a voice, and I received replies offline that answered my question and solved
my problem. Thank you to those who responded.

I ran into this issue after I had modified text2wave so it allowed the user
to select the voice when the script was invoked. I also noticed - for some
inexplicable reason - that neither "(voice_rab_diphone)" nor "(set!
current-voice (voice_rab_diphone))" worked when I attempted to use those
statements from inside text2wave. Either way, attempting to render text
using text2wave in this fashion would result in an error from SIOD
complaining that rab_diphone (or whatever voice I'd selected) was an invalid
parameter.

The only thing I could get to work from inside text2wave was to use the
(voice.select) function. When I did this the volume of the rendered
utterance came out awfully low, and the fix suggested by those who emailed
me did the trick.

The $64 question that I'm sure Alan Black could answer off the top of his
head - why did I have to resort to (voice.select)? Why didn't (set!
current-voice (...)) or calling the voice definition function work from
inside text2wave? Did festival have to be initialized first?

Anyone?
