Right you need CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE set to use the vesa console 
frame buffer, especially on laptops.  Its not set in Arjan's 2.6 kernels 
for some reason.  Would be great if we could on by default in future 
releases?

Right you need CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE set to use the vesa console
