What file, full path name, did you alter?

Because some files actually belong to packages and aren't guaranteed to be
replaced on updates.

What you should, probably (since I'm not a lightdm user, do is to modify
/etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf and change the line
background=/usr/share/backgrounds/default.png
to point to the image file you wish to use.
