I know nothing about maple, but if it is heavily graphics
oriented, VNC might actually work better, if you run the
VNC server on the remote system and vncviewer on the local
system (using ssh forwarding for the VNC port if necessary
to get through firewalls).

Since vnc only paints screen diffs since the last time it
painted, you often find heavy graphics work faster (though
interacting with graphics is another matter :-).
