This error is likely to be the problem.  It looks like your
file system is in an error state.  Many things break if you
cannot do a "pwd"

 > % exit
 > (appldev) exmh-1.6.2- ls -ld .
 > drwxr-xr-x  4 appldev      1024 Aug 23 20:20 ./
