I'm guessing the GNOME setting will define just what application to use.
You'll also need to set the Firefox preference to tell Firefox how to
handle it.

Actually, I think it is a GNOME setting. Under Preferences in the GNOME
main menu from the panel, there is an entry for default applications.
Listed are terminal, web browser and mail application. I believe
Evolution uses the program specified there. I have "epiphany -n %s"
which opens a new tab in Epiphany from Evolution.
