The simplest way would be to run:

tune2fs -l /dev/evms/volume_name |grep has_journal

If that returns something, it's ext3. If it returns nothing, it's ext2. I'll 
check the "query" code in the EVMS ext2/3 plugin and see if it is displaying 
information about the presence of a journal. If it's not already doing that, 
I'll try to add something.
