Yes, there's extra patches needed to use snapshots on 2.6 kernels. I guess I 
assumed you had already applied those. :)  Full instructions for downloading 
packages and patches and building the kernel are always available at
http://evms.sf.net/install/

It's kind of tough to figure out whether the snapshot module is available. 
There's some new ioctl commands to get the list of currently loaded DM 
targets, but there's also the possibility that the module simply isn't loaded 
yet. I'll have to think a bit about how to check for that, and try to prevent 
creating snapshots if the kernel side isn't available.

And unfortunately, I don't think the snapshot code will be in the mainline 
kernel for a bit.
