Yes, that's quite possible. I haven't looked very carefully at the
strace output after having figured out what the error was, maybe I
missread it. 

In addition, my solution (mounting /var on tmpfs) would have solved the
problem in both cases.

Yes, I'm sure of using 2.0.1 in initrd too.
