A stock Debian kernel, installed from binary.

The stock Debian kernel-source presumably starts with about the same
settings (though my initial kernel was 2.4.18 and I built 2.4.20).
The problem was that I changed a lot of the settings at once. Not
exactly a successful shortcut.

That's what I thought, but I wondered if it had become dated.
Something introduced a dependence on devfs along the way. Perhaps it
was in the Debian stuff, not the EVMS stuff. I explicitly turned off
the devfs options for the kernel, but perhpas I also enabled something
else that required it.

Anyway, I seem to have a lot of bells and whistles now, having
stumbled into a situation where I have initrd and devfs enabled. So
now I could actually put my root fs under EVMS; I'm not sure if that's
wise to do though.
