Then please call it something like "3.7.0+lzo".  Saying "3.8.0-beta1"
suggests that it's a precursor to the 3.8.0 release (which it might
not be if the maintainer has some serious issues with your changes),
and that you've got the authority to say so (which you haven't if
you're not the maintainer, and the maintainer hasn't told you to do
so).  If that really is the case, fine; it just doesn't sound like it
from what you've said.
