some help would be greatly appreciated, before i string myself up on a 
rafter in the basement.

i have a radeon 8500 AIW 128MB, running Red Hat Linux, using the updated 
XFree86 binary that someone posted to this list earlier (to get beyond 
ABI version errors).

sorry if there's too much info here, but better than too little i guess. 
  here are the facts:


i'm able to start X, but when i start (e.g.) wolfenstein e.t., the 
program dumps out after starting with this message:

when i run dri's install.sh, i get the following:
