Maybe you just have to run make clean before you recompile the kernel.
This way you are sure that everything is recompiled with the new
compiler version.
I don't know how Slackware handles multiple compiler versions installed
at the same time. You can find out the default with `gcc --version`. If
you want to use a different version you have to change the Kernel and
DRM Makefiles.
