yep. it's a known problem. I have the exact same symptoms.
I don't know why, or what can be done about it.
your debugging is farther than I got. :)

I'm told that the Matrox drivers aren't under very active development; so
that's why it hasn't been fixed.
you could try posting to the Xpert list (xpert@xfree86.org), and add your
voice to the list of other users who have this problem. :)
